White Horse kicked off the week with an outing to Basement Dwellers. The hosts galloped into a clear lead and It was around the half way point before White Horse came out of the starting gate to enter the race and begin winning sets. Andy Godfrey broke the deadlock with 3 singles sets and Ian Rew followed suit with a further 3. There was modest success in the doubles when Jamie Robertson joined his teammates to help secure 3 doubles sets. After trailing for the whole match, White Horse cantered over the finishing line with 9 points.

Basement Dwellers pressed their opponents throughout the match in their race for the top of the table, with both Joe Camp and Jasper Pye scoring maximums in the singles. It was Joe who received the player of the match award. Kerry Manicom secured the remaining 5 singles sets before the team went on to score a maximum in the doubles as Basement Dwellers romped home with a final tally of 32.

Wiveliscombe were at home to Roy’s Boys where the home team started to catch up with their matches. David Woodland was back on top form and received the player of the match award for his singles maximum. Eamon Farrelly  just missed his maximum, with 8 singles sets and Harry Woodland put in his first appearance this season with 4 sets. Wiveliscombe dominated the doubles with another maximum to give them a decisive victory with 30 points.

Roy’s Boys worked hard all evening with Barry Hooper top-scoring with 6 sets in the singles. Roy Hooper added a further 3, with a single set added by new team member, Paul Sams. With success in only one doubles set, Roy’s Boys ended their evening with 11 points.

Gnomads travelled to challenge Plan B in what turned out to be a gruelling and close-fought  match. The home team battled hard and missed winning no less than 10 sets by the minimum 2-point margin. For all players the match saw an unusually high number of nets and edges, causing much frustration for Plan B. Geoff Williams top-scored with 5, and both Martin Shoots and Robin Arkell added 4 singles sets apiece. With 5 further doubles sets, Plan B ended the match with a creditable 18 points.

Gnomads stuck to their task throughout the evening with maximums in the singles for Martin Rant and Tony Brooks, with Martin receiving the player of the match award. Derek Mayall completed the singles scoreline with 4 sets. A maximum in the doubles gave Gnomads a clear victory with a hard-earned 31 points.

Hawks faced a tough task when they faced last year’s champions, Wiveliscombe. The junior based team acquitted themselves well, and were undaunted by the challenge. Mark Scyner put in a captain’s performance, winning 6 singles sets. Alfie Southam took a set off of each of his opponents for his 3, with Nathaniel Southam adding one further singles set. With one doubles set, Hawks ended the match with 11 points.

Wiveliscombe were playing their second match of the week and had to fight hard all evening. In the singles, David Woodland and Eamon Farrelly both scored maximums, with Eamon receiving the player of the match award. Paul Nutkins just missed his maximum with 8 sets before the players combined to score a further maximum in the doubles, taking Wiveliscombe’s total to 35 points for the match.

Plan B also had their second match of the week when they were hosted by Wanderers. Still sharp from their earlier match, Plan B were focussed on maximising their points tally with the aim of making the cut at the end of this first round of matches. In the singles it was maximums all the way for Geoff Williams, Martin Shoots and Robin Arkell, with Geoff awarded player of the match. Plan B also closed out the doubles with a further maximum for a grand slam score of 36 points.

Wanderers are an improving team in their first competition year comprising Laurie and Cass Chalk, Tim Bosley and Jani Jasielczuk – who was the doubles specialist for this match. There was a late rally in the match by the home team, however, Wanderers never managed to prevail in a set as they concluded their final match for this part of the season.
