Basement Dwellers started this week’s round of matches when they hosted Drifters. For the home team, Vince Court showed the visitors the way with his unopposed maximum, earning him the player of the match award. Kerry Manicom was also in good form scoring 8, with substitute Mike Stevens adding the final 5 singles sets. 6 doubles sets then gave Basement Dwellers a clear victory with a total of 28 points.

Drifters gave a good account of themselves with Andrew Miles giving another demonstration on the use of his pimple bat. Andrew top-scored with 6 singles sets. The remaining singles sets were added by Liz Fletcher with 4, and David Smith with 2. The team combined to add a further 3 doubles points to take Drifters’ total score to 15. It must be noted that a further 10 sets were lost by Drifters by the minimum two point margin – an impressive performance against last season’s division 1 Runners Up.

Roy’s Boys travelled over to Minehead to play Allsorts for what was going to be a difficult match against the current league leaders. Their expectations were duly met as the home team relentlessly and consistently powered their way through the match. Curtis King continued to improve his averages as his maximum earned him player of the match. The ambidextrous Sifa Vea narrowly missed his maximum, scoring 8, and Steve Brooks added an excellent 7 singles sets. Allsorts closed out the doubles with another maximum to give them a decisive win with 33 points, extending their lead at the top of the table.

Barry Hooper was the shining light for Roy’s Boys, winning all 6 of the team’s singles sets. He then teamed up with Roy Hooper to win one consolation doubles set to give them a final score of 7 for the evening.

This week’s outing for White Horse was to the Colt House – the home venue of Plan B. From the off, Plan B made the running, leaving White Horse to pick up their pace as the match progressed. For the home team, Geoff Williams led the field, his maximum earning him the player of the match award. Liz Fletcher played as substitute for the evening and had an outstanding match as she notched up an excellent 7 singles sets. Martin Shoots concluded the singles with a solid 6 sets to his credit. Despite scoring a maximum in the doubles, it has to be said that all sets played were gruelling affairs with the home team staying the course to give Plan B the match victory with 31 points.

White Horse found themselves reined in by their opponents and were never allowed to get into their stride. For David Bryant it was his first outing of the season and he and Andy Godfrey were neck and neck in the singles – each winning 6 sets. White Horse were unable to add further singles sets, however, Jamie Robertson combined with his team mates to help grind out 5 doubles sets, taking their total for the match to a hard earned 17 points.

Wanderers found themselves at the Lawns where they entertained Gnomads. With the challengers pressing the leaders of the league, this was always going to be a tough match. Wanderers struggled to find the path to success and it was down to  Jani Jasielczuk to win the only 3 singles sets of the evening. Jani was joined by Tim Bosley to add 1 doubles set, leaving the final score for Wanderers at 4 points.

Gnomads showed no mercy and Tony Brooks, Martin Rant and Derek Mayall each scored a maximum in the singles, with Derek being awarded player of the match. With a maximum in the doubles, Gnomads ended their evening with a grand slam score of 36.
