The qualifying round for the West Somerset Table Tennis League was completed this week when all outstanding matches were played.

It was a busy night for Roy’s Boys when they played two matches on the same evening at the Lawns. In the first match Hawkes were the hosts. The home team were consistent in their scoring with Nathaniel Southam, Alfie Southam and Mark Scyner winning 6 singles sets apiece. They combined in the doubles to win an excellent 7 sets. This gave Hawks the victory with 25 points.

For Roy’s Boys Barry Hooper was the star of the evening and was awarded player of the match for his singles maximum. The final 2 singles sets were added by Roy Hooper before they both combined to gain 3 sets from the doubles. Roy’s Boys ended this match with 14 points.

Immediately after Roy’s Boys concluded this match it became opening time to challenge an on-form Last Chance Saloon. No doubt a little fatigued as the evening went on, it was the youthful Barry Hooper who scored all of Roy’s Boys wins with 8 singles sets. Full credit should be given to Roy’s Boys for Herculean effort in playing their final two matches on the same evening.

Last Chance Saloon were keen to enhance their position in this round and improve their averages. Their play was relentless throughout with Curtis King scoring a singles maximum and claiming the player of the match award. The ambidextrous Sifa Vea added 8 and Paul Rees the final 7 singles sets. With a maximum in the doubles Last Chance Saloon called time with a total of 33.

The final match of this round saw last year’s two leading teams clashing when Basement Dwellers entertained Wiveliscombe. The home team played steadily but were under pressure from the start. Player of the match, Vince Court, led the way with 7 sets, followed by Mike Vickery with 4. A well-deserved final singles set was added by Kerry Manicom. With 4 doubles sets, Basement Dwellers ended their campaign with 16 points.

Wiveliscombe were seeking to head the table in this qualifying round and played consistently throughout the match. John Edbrooke was top-scorer for the visitors with 7 sets, with David Woodland and Paul Nutkins adding 6 singles sets apiece. An excellent 8 doubles sets were added to take Wiveliscombe’s score to a victorious total of 27, and a top of the table finish.

With this round of matches now complete it establishes the ranking of each team within West Somerset. The teams will now be split into two divisions. Teams will then play one match against all other teams in their respective divisions to see who will be the division 1 & 2 champions for the 2022 / 23 winter season. All teams are invited to enter the league before it starts in a couple of weeks. Some teams may decide to change their names before the league starts, but any new teams will automatically enter division 2.
