Gnomads started off the New Year matches after the festive break when they hosted Wiveliscombe. The home team met strong opposition and it was only Martin Rant who made any headway in the singles, winning 8 sets. Derek Mayall added one final singles set before the duo gleaned one doubles set to conclude Gnomads’ score at 10 points.

Wiveliscombe had to work hard for their victory as the hosts pushed them in each set. Player of the match was awarded to John Edbrooke for his singles maximum, closely followed by Paul Nutkins with 8 and David Woodland with 7 singles sets. With a maximum in the doubles, Wiveliscombe ended the evening with a total of 33 points.

Hawks faced a tough match without their captain this week when White Horse trotted into town. Liz Fletcher played a splendid role for Hawks as substitute for the evening, and top-scored with 3 singles sets. Nathaniel Southam managed to reign in 2 further singles sets, with Alfie Southam concluding the scoring for Hawks with one final singles set. In the doubles, the visitors showed a clean set of heals as they galloped towards the winning post as Hawks ended their evening with 6 points.

White Horse left the starting line with their heads down in their bid to maximise their score. With the bit between his teeth, it was David Bryant who won the player of the match award for his maximum. With Ian Rew back in the saddle, and closely followed by Andy Godfrey, everyone scored maximums in the singles. With another maximum in the doubles, White Horse had a run-away victory as they entered the winners’ enclosure with a grand-slam 36 points.
