The second phase of the West Somerset Table Tennis League got underway this week. Two divisions have been  formed, based on the team positions in the first half of the season. There was a tentative start for many players who have yet to find their form due to the gap in match play.

Division 1

Basement Dwellers started proceedings when they hosted Gnomads. For the home team, Toby Kerslake was on form as he powered his way to a maximum, and the player of the match award. Mike Vickery put in a solid performance with 6 singles sets, with Kerry Manicom adding the final 3. The doubles were equally contested with each team winning 6 sets, this brought the final score for Basement Dwellers to 24 points and a narrow victory.

For Gnomads, the singles sets were scored by Tony Brooks with 7 plus 6 from Martin Rant, who struggled to find his usual form during this match. Liz Fletcher played as substitute and helped Gnomads to win 6 doubles sets during the evening. Final tally for Gnomads – 19 points.

Allsorts missed topping the first half qualifying table by a mere 2 points, so are now determined to win division 1. Their first match was against Plan B, who just made the cut for the division. The visitors never settled due to lack of match practise and injury, leaving Allsorts to score a Grand Slam 36 points. Player of the match was awarded to Scott Milton, with maximums also for Curtis King and the ambidextrous Sifa Vea.

For the visitors, one singles set was won by each of Geoff Williams, Martin Shoots and Robin Arkel. Geoff and Robin joined forces to win a further 2 doubles sets to bring the final score for Plan B to 5.

Division 2

The first match saw Hawks entertain Wanderers. From the start the home team drew ahead and continued to extend their lead throughout the evening. Mark Scyner received the player of the match award for his maximum, and was well supported by Alfie Southam with 7 sets. Nathaniel Southam added the final 2 singles sets, having missed others by a very small margin. With 8 doubles sets, Hawks claimed the victory with 26 points. Wanderers had a steady game and Steve Brooks proved to be the ‘Wandering Star’ as he top-scored with 7. Laurie and Cass Chalk concluded the singles scoreline with 4 and 3 sets respectively. Wanderers put up a good fight in the doubles and prevailed in 4 sets to give them a final score of 18 points
