The West Somerset Table Tennis League commenced its 2024/5 season this week. This year there are two divisions of 6 teams that will play each other twice – home and away. Matches should be concluding around the end of the year which enables the WSTTA to hold other events in the New Year. We wish all players an enjoyable and successful season.
Division 1
Allsorts started their campaign as they challenged White Horse. It was the home team that was on a charge as they led White Horse from the off. Consistency was the order of the day for Allsorts, led by Curtis King with 8 singles sets, closely followed by Andy Berry with 7 and the ambidextrous Sifa Vea with 6. Allsorts also prevailed in the doubles with 7 sets to show their rivals a clean set of heals with 28 points.
White Horse trailed throughout, however, David Bryant kept his head down and headed the field with a maximum to earn the player of the match award. Despite the hard going, Jamie Robertson completed the singles scoreline with a further 2 sets. The doubles were closely contested and Ian Rew helped his teammates to gain a total of 5 sets. White Horse returned to home pastures with 16 points.
Division 2
It was Roy’s Boys who hosted the first match of the season when they entertained Waterrow. Barry Hooper was the star player for the home team winning 7 singles sets. Roy Hooper battled hard for 3, and the final set was added by Paul Sams. Without any success in the doubles, Roy’s Boys ended their evening on 11 points. From the start of the match Waterrow dominated proceedings. Eamonn Farrelly earned the player of the match award for his maximum and was well supported in the singles by Dennis Buckingham with 6 sets, and by Russell Foote with 4. Their maximum in the doubles gave Waterrow a convincing victory with 28 points.
Wanderers has a new line-up and looking to be a title contender this year. Matt Lawrence led the way for the home side with an excellent 8 singles sets with Laurie and Cass Chalk adding a solid 7 sets apiece before scoring a maximum in the doubles for a final total of 31 points. Their opponents this week were Eagles and it was Danny O’Leary who was flying high as he scored a maximum to claim the player of the match award. No further singles sets were added, however, David Veale and Tim Bosley helped secure 3 doubles sets for their team, bringing Eagles’ total score to 12 points.
The final match of the week saw Drifters taking on Phoenix at the Lawns. Stand-out player for the home team was Liz Fletcher who has been improving her game over the summer and winning 5 hard-earned singles sets. David Smith battled hard for 4, and Andrew Miles added the last set. Drifters won 2 doubles sets and ended their evening with 12 points.
Phoenix, as a team, rose from the ashes of Plan B who were relegated last season. From the start of the match the visitors were flying as both Geoff Williams and Martin Shoots scored maximums in the singles, with Geoff being awarded player of the match. Despite the occasional flap, Robin Arkell landed 7 singles sets before Phoenix swooped on the doubles for another maximum to leave them perched on the top of the division 2 table with 34 points.
