Bexhill Table Tennis Club players featured prominently in the Eastbourne League Closed Tournament, which took place at Shinewater Sports Centre on Sunday 12th March.
Andy Norwood, who plays for Ministries in Eastbourne won the Mens Singles, but pride of place has to go to Pam Winter who won the treble of Ladies Singles, Ladies Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Pam, who plays for Sussex Veterans Over-60s as well as for the Bexhill and Eastbourne Borough clubs was seeded 2 in the Ladies Singles but overcame top seed Alison Jordan (Ministries) in the final 11-8, 9-11, 11-5, 11-6. Semi-finals were played as groups of three, with Bexhill’s Kim Shearer (Borough) coming second in the group won by Pam.
Winter and Shearer formed a winning combination in the Ladies Doubles which was played in a group format with Jordan and Sue Paice (Ministries) finishing as runners-up.
Pam clinched the treble in the Mixed Doubles, partnered by another Bexhill player, Faldie Adams, who plays for Laughton in Eastbourne. As top seeds, they won the final 11-4, 9-11, 11-7, 11-7 against Jordan and Bob Lowe (Ministries) after the Ministries pair had scraped through a semi-final against Steve Hickey and Antje Nater (Polegate) 14-12 in the fifth.
In the Mens Singles, Bexhill’s Andy Norwood was untroubled throughout, beating Rory Scott (Laughton) 11-5, 11-2, 11-6 in a one-sided final. Scott had earlier beaten No. 2 seed Paul Barry (Hailsham) in a tight five setter while Norwood beat Ryan Heselden in the other semi-final.
Another Bexhillian, Ryan Warner, took the Mens Consolation Singles, beating Malcom Barber in straight sets in the final.
Adams and Warner made it to the Mens Doubles Semi-final before losing to eventual winners Barry and Heselden, who beat Scott and James Gorridge in the final.
The final silverware for Bexhill came via Andy Panayi (Polegate) who won the Division Two singles, beating clubmate Steve Hickey in the final.
