SENIOR LEAGUE 2023-24 WEEK 12

Division 1

The early return to table tennis action in the Doric sponsored senior leagues saw a rare blip from the league leaders, who have had their lead at the top cut to just 2 points, the smallest gap there has been since October.

League leaders Whistlers A were defeated for the first time this season, as 6th placed side and fellow club team Whistlers B surprisingly edged past them 6-4, in their best performance of the season, and only their second victory. Lawrence Stacey has had a mixed bag so far this season in terms of his results in the local senior leagues, but he has continued to excel in British National League action, and also the recent Channel Islands Top 12 Qualification event held just before Christmas, which he topped. He continued this strong form in this fixture and was pivotal in the shock result. He was in full control during a trio of strong straight sets wins over twin Joshua, who sits 2nd in the Averages, as well as Joseph Bourgaize and 2nd Division reserve Stuart Sarre. He finished off his evening unbeaten due to teaming with Mark Pipet to overcome Josh and Bourgaize in 4 sets in the doubles match. Pipet beat Sarre in straight sets, whilst the B side's reserve of their own, Ben Sharp, was also a straight sets winner over Sarre, to secure the win. For the beaten leaders, Josh and Bourgaize each won twice. The latter's clash against Pipet in the final match of the night was the closest of all. Pipet led 2-1 after edging the third 12-10, but Bourgaize fought well taking the 4th by the same score, before clinching the deciding end 11-7.

Defending champions Lions A capitalised on the slip and moved to within 2 points, following a narrow 6-4 victory of their own, over 4th placed side Lions B. Joshua Butler and Liam Robilliard were each on hand to obtain singles victories over Jamie Ferbrache and Nye Matthew, whilst the duo also combined well in the doubles to overcome Ben Foss and Ferbrache in 4 sets. The final victory for the victors came courtesy of Matthew Stubbington's straight sets win over Matthew. Averages leader Foss was impressive during his singles matches, dropping just single ends to Butler and Robilliard in the process, whilst Ferbrache added a consolation straight sets win over Stubbington in the final match of the night.

Bottom placed side Lions E made the perfect start to the new year and earned their first victory of the season, courtesy of a 6-4 win over 5th placed side Lions D. The result was one which saw reserves for both sides contribute heavily to the success. The most impressive was Ellis Tomlin for the victorious E side, as he earned 2 key victories. The best of these came in his first match, where he stunned the impressive Ryan Bichard, who was occupying 3rd position in the averages heading into the fixture. He played some superb table tennis in a match which saw some excellent rallies. He led 2-1, before Bichard forced the deciding end. Tomlin was in a strong position at 9-6 up before Bichard restored parity at 9-9. The rally at 9-9 was a lengthy one, but Tomlin stuck in well after Bichard had regained the advantage and Tomlin managed to hold his nerve in the final point to take it 11-9. His other win came against Sam Clark in 4 sets. Paul Hainsworth also won 2 matches on the night for the victors, but needed to do it the hard way in both. The D side's strong reserve Dan Collenette led 2-0 in the match opener, before Hainsworth battled back to edge it in 5, whilst the final match of the night saw the same situation, with Clark leading 2-0. In this match again Hainsworth battled back to the deciding end, but Clark looked to be back in pole position when leading 4-0. Incredibly Hainsworth turned this around with a run of 11 points to conclude the turnaround. Andy Gill beat Clark in straight sets and the final win was achieved in the doubles by Hainsworth and Gill over Bichard and Clark in straight sets. For the beaten side, Bichard made up for his initial loss to Tomlin by beating Hainsworth in 4 sets and Gill in straight sets, whilst Collenette battled past Gill and Tomlin, each in well contested 4 set encounters.

Division 2

Whistlers E maintained their 3 point advantage at the top of the second division after comfortably defeating Ravenscroft Panthers A 8-2 this week. Averages leader Craig Dunning was unbeaten due to his singles wins over Brandon Ferbrache and Ben Foote in 4 sets and Peter Vivian in straight sets. Tim Le Page and reserve Henri Whitehorne each defeated Foote and Vivian in singles action, whilst Dunning combined with Le Page to overcome Ferbrache and Vivian in 4 sets in the doubles rubber. Ferbrache prevented the whitewash due to his wins over Le Page and Whitehorne in 5 and 4 sets respectively.

Division 3

The third Division continues to be the closest at the top as just a single point separates the leading duo, who are each yet to be beaten.

Lions J are the side with the advantage and they earned a strong 8-2 win over Ravenscroft Panthers D this week. Young Luke Evans continues to impress and he was unbeaten courtesy of his straight sets singles wins over Huxley Le Conte, Richard Wellfair and reserve Micah Cohen. Fellow junior Aiden Ozanne beat Wellfair and Cohen in straight sets, but was beaten by Le Conte in 4 sets. Andy Ozanne defeated Le Conte and Cohen in straight sets, but lost to Wellfair in 4 sets. The doubles was won by the youthful duo of Evans and Aiden against Le Conte and Wellfair in straight sets.

Ravenscroft Panthers C remain hot on the heels of the leaders, however they faced a much tougher test against Lions I, but just did enough to sneak it 6-4. Steve Potter is leading the averages due to having lost just one singles match and the Lions man was the resistance in this fixture too. Despite playing against the Panthers side, who have 3 of the top 6 players in the averages, Potter was unbeaten in the fixture. He beat junior Barnaby Groves in 5 sets, Shaun Mosley in 4 sets and Steve Martin in straight sets. He also teamed with Ollie Sparks to win the doubles against Mosley and Martin in 5 sets, despite having trailed 2-0. The Panthers side did however win the remaining 6 singles rubbers against Sparks and reserve Rolands Tracums to keep the heat on the leaders.

Division 4

Lions O have led the way at the top of the 4th Division since the first week of the season and their 3 point lead was preserved this week due to their 7-3 win over Lions N. Reserve Derek Cave proved to be key to proceedings as he was unbeaten. He defeated Val Guilbert and Diane Le Page in straight sets, as well as Rolands Tracums in 5 sets. Lionel Jones added wins over Le Page and Tracums, however his 100% singles record, the last remaining one across all Divisions, was lost, as he slumped to a surprise straight sets defeat to Guilbert. Katy Collenette added a 5 set win over Tracums to secure the win, whilst Jones teamed with Cave to win the doubles against Guilbert and Tracums in straight sets.
