JUNIOR TOP TWELVE
Last Sunday saw the islands toptwelve juniors gather at Foxdale School for the annual staging of the Top Twelve tournament.
The trophy was retained by the existing champion Ronan McDonnell, who just out gunned Mason McLarney 11:8 in the fifth end, having pulled back a deficit of 2:7 in the last rubber. Whilst McDonnell went into the final match as the favourite, McLarney made him work very hard for every point, with both players hitting many top spin winners.
William Bayley secured third place after beating Danny Hamill 3:0, with Hamill’s earlier victory over Hadyn McLarney enabling him to finish in the top four and move up the standing from his opening position of fifth.
McLarney then proved to be too strong for Sean Drewry, with these two then finishing fifth & sixth respectively . In the earlier stages they both earned three wins a piece in their groups which secured them both a slot in the mid rankings. There was then little to choose between Ben Christian & Chris Holmes, with Christian winning the match 3:1 by the narrowest margin for seventh.
The lower section was dominated by Kieran Chan who just had too many top spins for Sam Callister, and in the last match there was a final end decider between Ashley Reid & Matthew Evans, with Reid taking it 11:9 with some brave forehand drives.
