SIX OF THE BEST FOR MAGGIE MULHERN AT THE VETS
The Veteran’s Table Tennis Tournament was eventually held at Centre 21 last Saturday, and all the players were grateful to Malc Lewis for organising the event which had been postponed due to the snow earlier this month.
Two players have dominated the tournament over the years, Graham McFarlane who unfortunately couldn’t make the rescheduled event, and Maggie Mulhern who added to her impressive tally. Mulhern remains unbeaten in both the over 50’s and the ladies doubles but, with only three female competitors in attendance, sadly the doubles could not be played.
Over 50’s Ladies
Winner – Maggie Mulhern
The three women played on a round robin basis. Maggie Mulhern took her sixth over 50’s title ahead of Jackie Gill and third placed Marion Forrest. Mulhern dropped a leg against Forrest, then worryingly went two sets down against Gill before fighting back to maintain her unbeaten run 11/13, 5/11, 11/5, 13/11, 11/4. Gill won her encounter with Forrest 11/7, 11/6, 11/8.
Over 60’s Ladies
Winner – Marion Forrest
Just two ladies were eligible, so it was a straight final between Marion Forrest and Jackie Gill. They had met earlier in the Over 50’s event, but in a reversal of fortunes Forrest forced the pace and triumphed 11/6, 11/5, 4/11, 13/11.
Over 40’s Mens
Winner – Liam Chan
Disappointingly only three players elected to play in this event which was won by Arbory’s Liam Chan who beat both Andy Horne and Malcolm Cummings in five fast and furious sets. Horne came second by beating Cummings 12/10, 12/10, 6/11, 11/7.
Over 50’s Men
Winner – Andy Horne
Five players competed on a round robin basis with Andy Horne coming through undefeated in straight sets. Malcolm Cummings had to settle for his second 2nd place as he lost to the winner Horne 10/12, 5/11, 9/11. Steve Curtis beat both Dario Mazzotta and Malc Lewis to finish third. Mazzotta was left with the wooden spoon, losing heavily to Lewis 2/11, 10/12, 3/11.
Over 60’s Mens
Winner – Mario Mazzotta
Now the proud possessor of a free bus pass, Mario Mazzotta taxied to victory 11/6, 11/6, 10/12, 11/13, 11/7 over Steve Curtis who had beaten him in the over 50’s event.
Over 40’s Men’s Doubles
Winners - Liam Chan and Malcolm Cummings
Liam Chan and Malcolm Cummings beat Andy Horne and Malc Lewis 11/9, 15/13, 11/8.
Over 50’s Men’s Doubles
Winners – Malcolm Cummings and Andy Horne
Malcolm Cummings and Andy Horne beat Steve Curtis and Malc Lewis 8/11, 11/5, 11/7, 11/8.
Mixed Doubles
Winners – Maggie Mulhern and Andy Horne
In the last event of the day three teams competed in a round robin tournament. Second place went to Gill and Cummings with a straight sets win over Forrest and Lewis.
