Match Report 4 December 2013

Before this week's matches in the Isle of Man Table Tennis League there was a three-way tie at the top of Division One between Copy Shop A, Breakaway A and Arbory.  At the end of the night Copy Shop and Arbory were still locked together but Breakaway had fallen back.

DIVISION ONE

Foxdale A 2, Copy Shop A 8

Marc Townsend's five game victory over Ewan Watterson at 12/10 in the decider was Foxdale's only singles win but they took the doubles - again in five - to claim another point.  However, three apiece from Ronan McDonnell and Sean Drewry and two more from Watterson gave Copy Shop a comfortable win at the expense of Townsend, David Lovelady and Will Bayley.

Tower A 2, Arbory 8

Arbory won with the same score-line to enable them to keep pace with Copy Shop.  Liam Chan and John Magnall were unbeaten with Mike Tamarov adding another against the unlucky David Parsons.  Tim Baker and Paul Kozlowski each tamed Tamarov but Tower had to work hard for their points, winning both matches in five sets.

Strathallan 5, Breakaway A 5

Fifth placed Strathy prevented Breakaway from staying joint top and did themselves some good in the process, moving up to fourth place.  Hadyn McLarney won two with Andrew Horne and Julian Briercliffe contributing one more each for Strathy who also won the doubles in four games for a well-earned draw.  Paul Corrin was unbeaten for Breakaway, Mark Johnson and Malcolm Cummings getting their other two points.

Travellers A 6, Foxdale B 4

Foxdale led 4-3 at one stage in the battle between the two bottom teams but Travellers took the last three matches of the night for a 6-4 victory.  Captain Paul Nelson led by example with three wins for Travellers while Gary Shilling won two more and the pair then teamed up to win the doubles and secure overall victory.  Neil Quane was best for Foxdale with two wins while Mike Bayley and Andy McLarney earned a point each against substitute Stuart Mason.

DIVISION TWO

Tower C 0, Travellers B 10

Travellers kept their lead at the top of Division Two, taking all ten against next to the bottom Tower C.  Dave Callow came nearest to putting Tower on the score sheet, just losing 11/7 in the fifth set to Stu Mason. Mason and his namesake Stu Douglas plus Colin Brown won the remainder for the loss of only one more set against Callow, Mike Chapman and Margaret Forsyth.

Breakaway B 9, Copy Shop C 1

Breakaway are now up to second after this comprehensive win.  Aaron Faragher and Chris Kewley were undefeated while Ben Christian only lost one to Rob Sim who was darting from table to table as he was playing two matches for Copy Shop.  The match of the night saw Faragher just pipping George Melvin 12/10 in the fifth set whilst Henry Hyde caused Christian to concentrate in their close encounter.

Surestrike Ramsey, A 3 Peel A 7

Peel have been the biggest mover in this division in recent weeks and are now up to fourth.  Malcolm Lewis set them on the way with three wins while Matty Evans lost only once and Maggie Mulhern contributed another.  The Ramsey trio - Rhys Yardley, Carl Blatcher and Wael Kassim - won one each.

Tower B 8, Copy Shop B 2

Tower have had something of a roller-coaster season so far, moving up and down the league table with some regularity.  However, this win sees them move up two places to fifth.  Steve Curtis was unbeaten while Simon Radcliffe and reserve Dave Callow added two more by both beating Pedro Cardoso and Chris Aspden. Substitute Rob Sim pulled two back for Copy Shop.

Peel B 2, Travellers C 8

Successive wins for Travellers not only move them out of the relegation places but up to eighth, their highest position so far.  Maurice Campbell had three good wins with Alan Harding and Adrian Tinkler contributing a brace each.  Peel’s young substitute Nathan Evans tried hard but regulars Fraser Dorling and Vishal Patel both won one each for Peel who stay at the foot of the table.

DIVISION THREE

Peel C 10, Junior Development 0

Peel now have a nine points lead at the top of this division thanks to 100% efforts from Nathan Evans, Harry Walters and Sasha Thomas.

Copy Shop D 7, Surestrike Ramsey B 3

Copy Shop move into second place, as Travellers D had a night off.  Kevin Drewry was unbeaten with Max Walker winning two and Zac Walker, one against Kerenza Baker. Calvin Koske got two back for Ramsey while Marcus Koske brought their total to three.  This was one of the longest matches of the night with four requiring a decider.

Copy Shop E 3, Surestrike Ramsey C 7

These two teams changed positions in the table after Ramsey's victory which was gained thanks to three wins from Billy Cain, two from Liam Cooper and one from Olly Brew over Freya Melvin. Two wins from Pat Halliwell and one from Libby Quaggin ensured the Copy Shop girls weren't too far behind at the end.
