Weekly Press Report - Week 4

Ramsey F remain top in Division 3 table tennis

Division 1

Copy Shop A (5) Travellers B (4)

Sean Drewry powered his way to 3 emphatic victories for the home side, and along with one victory apiece for Ewan Watterson and Adam Davies, enabled Copy Shop to edge out a battling Travellers B side. Copy Shop now sit 4th in the top division with 21 points. Sean beat John Shooter, William Shooter and Malc Lewis in straight sets, and maintains his 100% record after 12 matches, alongside Scott Lewis. The experienced Davies had a tough battle with the young but fast improving William, just pipping him in the 5th set. Watterson did likewise but in 3 sets. Malc Lewis used his short pip attacking style to good effect against Watterson in an exciting 5 set thriller with some very close games. Lewis also beat Davies in 5 sets in what must have seemed a long night for both. John Shooter had more straightforward wins against Davies and Watterson in straight sets.

Tower A (9) Desmond's Douglas A (0)

Tower needed to pick up points, as did Desmond's, having had a slow start to the season. They did just that with a solid 9-0 overhaul of the  unfortunate Desmonds team which comprised Jim Travers, Russell Kent and step up player Neil Ronan. Travers had an entertaining tussle with Will Bayley, and having gone 2-1 up, was pegged back by Bayley to lose in 5 sets. Bayley then beat Ronan in 4 and Kent in 3 sets. Mike Bayley beat Travers in 4, and then Kent in 3 - with some exciting rallies witnessed in both. Tower's 3rd player Ken Mitchell had straight set wins against Ronan and Kent, and then beat Travers in 4.

Strathallan (4) Arbory (5)

Strathallan halted Arbory's league progress somewhat by taking 4 points in this closely contested fixture. Julian Briercliffe led the way for Strahallan with a hugely impressive 3 wins against Jason Quirk, Khayee Vinas and Mike Tamarov. His match with long pips player Quirk went to 5 sets, and he then beat Vinas and Tamarov in 4. Neil Quane had his first outing of the season for the home side, and had a magnificent win against Mike Tamarov. Quane used his all out attacking style to great effect in what was an exciting and closely fought counter hitting match. He edged the 5th set 11-8 to take the point. Strathallan's Wayne Taylor won the first 2 sets against Tamarov, but the Arbory player managed to turn it around and he won the next 3 with an exciting final set going to Tamarov 13-11, and with it the match.

Ramsey B (2) Ramsey A (7)

Ramsey A continued their impressive progress this season with a good 7-2 win against their B team. Chris Holland led from the front with 3 wins. He beat Tim Baker in straight sets, but Wael Kassim and Glenn Callow did well to take a game apiece from the Island Championships runner up. Left hander Duncan Alexander also had 3 wins for the A team, beating Kassim in 3 sets, Callow in 4, and the battling Baker in 5. Chris Holmes had a tremendous and closely fought match against Baker, but lost to 10-12 in the last. Holmes beat Callow in 5, coming back from 2-1 down. Holmes then lost in 5 to Kassim, in another knife edge affair. This win leaves Ramsey A second in the table with 33 points, just behind Travellers with 35.

Ramsey C (0) Travellers A (9)

Travellers were ruthless in their dismantling of the unfortunate Ramsey C team. Scott Lewis, David Lovelady, and Malcolm Cummings all won 3 points with wins over William Dalugdugan, Rhys Yardley and Adrian Slater. New to the Travellers team and having returned after a long period away from the sport, this has been a tremendous start to the season for Lovelady. He beat Dalugdugan and Slater in 3 sets, and the experienced Yardley in 4 close games, to maintain his 100% record after 6 matches. Cummings did the same but had a struggle against Slater with the latter taking him to 5 sets before Cummings eased through in the end.

Division 2

Travellers C (7) Tower C (3)

Paul Matthieson-Nelson had 3 excellent wins, to add to one from Adrian Tinkler, and one from David Buck. He beat Steve Curtis in 4 close games, Barry Jenkins in 3, and Margaret Forsyth in 4 games. Tinkler beat hard-bat player Forsyth in 3 competitive sets. David Buck then beat Jenkins in 3 and Forsyth in 4 after losing the first set. Defensive specialist Steve Curtis had 2 good wins against Tinkler in 3, and Buck in 4 - the latter match producing a topsy turvy scoreline of 4-11, 16-14, 13-15, 3-11. The doubles went to Travellers in 3 games.

Copy Shop B (4) Peel B (6)

Copy Shop had a touch assignment here against a strong Peel B side. Stuart Perry had 3 solid wins for Peel, and Matty Evans had 2. For the home side, Malcolm Lambert beat Nathan Evans in 4 sets, but then lost out to brother Matty in 5, with the final game going to 11-13. Jean Paul Banaag had 2 tremendous citories against Matty in 3, and Nathan in 5, only to come up against a brick wall in the form of Stuart Perry who beat him in 3. Sonja Shaw had 1 tremendous win against Nathan in 5 cose sets, and was competitive in her match against Perry before losing in 4. Peel B took the match 6-4 then on the night, including a doubles win courtesy of the Evans brothers in a closely fought 5 setter against Lambert and Shaw.

Copy Shop C (3) Tower B (7)

Tower B fielded Dario Mazotta who was returning from injury, as was Graham McFarlane. Both did well alongside Simon Radcliffe, to win 2 matches each against step up player and rising star Ege Niiazi and Grant Paterson. Both however lost out to Kevin Drewry who had a very solid night, also winning the doubles alongside Paterson. Radcliffe won all his 3 matches to make it 7-3 to Tower, and take them to second place 2 points behind Peel A.

Ramsey D (1) Peel A (9)

Peel A moved to the top of Division 2 with a 9-1 thumping of Ramsey's D team. Stuart Mason and Ronan Thompson had 2 wins, whilst Ken Hegarty provided 2 points, only coming a cropper against Charlie Callow. Geoff Ball and Sally Green of Ramsey had no luck against their Peel opponents despite Geoff's matches against Mason and Thompson both going to 5 sets with some close games being seen. Sally had some cose matches against young Ronan, but lost in 4. The doubles went to Peel courtesy of Stuart and Ken in straight sets against Sally and Charlie.

Travellers D (6) Desmond's Douglas B (4)

Maurice Campbell won 2 matches and Jackie Gill won 1 match for Travellers. They also fielded Junior Development Player Amit Lanin who did really well to win 2 of his matches. For Desmond's, Richard Hill had a great night with 3 points, with his matches going to 5 against both Amit and Maurice, and to 4 against Jackie. Stephen Jelly won his match against Jackie, but their 3rd player Mark Varley had no luck on the night. The doubles was taken by Maurice and Amit who teamed up to great effect to beat Mark and Stephen in 3 sets.

Division 3

Ramsey E (8) Peel D (2)

Francesca Lord, Wilma Dalugdugan and Lisa Lord had a tremendous win over their Peel rivals with Francesca continuing her impressive start to the season, with 3 wins, as did Wilma.

Copy Shop D (0) Peel C (10)

Peel C had an emphatic win over Copy Shop with Amit Lannin, Bob Borland and David Stevenson each winning all 3 matches against the luckless Darren Shaw, Luke Saulnier and Pat Halliwell. All matches were won in  3 sets apart from Pat and Darren taking a game off Amit. The doubles was a closer affair but Bob and David won that in 4 sets to take the full 10 points, and pull Peel C up to 2nd spot in the table.

It was agreed to postpone two Division 3 matches that were scheduled for last Friday (half-term week). These will now take place on Wednesday 22nd December at 6-30pm.
