Weekly Press Report - Week 9
'Dan & Jane shine bright for Arbory B in Division 2’
Week 9 of the Fun88 sponsored IOM Table Tennis Association league, saw a resumption of the Singles fixtures for Divisions 1 and 2, alongside Division 3. There was some exciting on show as teams vied for position in their respective divisions.
Division 1
Ramsey A (6) Tower A (3)
Ramsey A remain in second position in the top tier - but only just, after bottom placed Tower nabbed 3 points from this tie. Adam Teare saw off Dave Parsons, albeit the Tower man put up a stout defence. Teare was solid in the 4th end however, taking it 11-9, and the match. He has less issues taking the match in 3 ends against Mike Bayley and Ken Mitchell. His teammate Duncan Alexander was also pushed hard by Parsons, just pulling through 11-9 in the 4th. Like Teare, he also saw off Bayley & Mitchell, blasting his way to straight sets wins. Will Dalugdugan made a welcome return to action for Ramsey after a few weeks off due to injury. Tower’s Parsons and Mitchell managed to defeat Will in 4 ends, whilst Bayley pipped him 11-9 in the final end, before breathing a huge sigh of relief.
Travellers A (8) Strathallan (1)
Scott Lewis maintained his 100% record with a commanding performance against Strahallan’s Ege Niyazi, Wayne Taylor, and Andy Patterson. Team mate Liam Chan was equally dominant in his straight ends wins over Ege and Wayne. Patterson was a more troublesome opponent for him, but he managed to pip Andy in the final end after being 2-0 down. Malcolm Cummings was Traveller’s 3rd player, and he added 2 points to the home side’s tally, with 3-0 wins over Ege and Wayne, albeit Ege pushed him hard 11-7, 13-11, 13-11. He stumbled against Patterson though in a closely fought match, with the Strathallan player taking it 14-12, 11-9, 11-9.
Arbory A (7) Ramsey B (2)
Mike Tamarov had a highly successful evening for Arbory, taking maximum points for the home side. Firstly he beat Tim Baker, taking the 4th game 12-10. He then looped his way past Chris Holmes and step-up player Francesca Lord in 3 ends. Amit Lanin was not allowed to get into his stride against Baker, with the experienced Ramsey player ruthless in taking the match in 3 ends. Amit was stretched by Francesca but the youngster saw her off in 3 close games. He pushed Holmes all the way before fading out 7-11 in the final end. Finally, for the home side, John Magnall extracted 3 points, impressively seeing off Baker 11-8, 12-10, 11-5. He had a tougher assignment against Holmes but managed to take the win 11-7 in the final end, and added a 3rd point by beating Francesca in 3.
Travellers B (7) Travellers C (2)
John Shooter was Player of the Match in this tie with 3 solid wins against Keeran Chan, David Buck, and Bob Borland. Malc Lewis added 2 points for the home side in defeating Buck and Borland, but was stopped in his tracks by Chan who claimed an impressive win over Lewis 11-8, 15-13, 12-10. Will Shooter also lost out to Keeran but he pushed him to a final end. Will then added wins against Buck and Borland to make it 7-2 for the home side which pushed them up to third place - only 1 behind second placed Ramsey A.
Division 2
Tower B (10) Ramsey D (0)
Tower B got back into gear with a result that leap-frogged them back into 2nd place in the table. Paul Callow was his usual tenacious self and is proving tough to beat as the Ramsey players discovered. Firstly, he beat Keith Herrington in 4 ends, then Vio Galan and Darren Shaw in 3 ends, Steve Curtis used all his guile and graft to add a further 3 points, with only Keith managing to take a game off him. Finally Simon Radcliffe stepped up and had no issues against Herrington or Shaw, but Galan proved a tougher test. Fresh from his doubles success last week, Vio took the first 2 games 13-11, 11-9, but was then pegged back by the experienced Tower player, with Simon taking the next 3 ends 11-7, 11-4, 11-6. Doubles also went to Tower with the very effective pairing of Steve & Simon notching up a further point by seeing off Shaw & Herrington 3-0.
Peel A (8) Ramsey C (2)
Jon Taylor Burt had a good win for Peel against youngster Wilma Dalugdugan , taking the match in 4 solid ends. He then swept past Francesa Lord in 3 games. He met with greater resistance from Adrian Slater in a topsy turvy match, with the Ramsey player just edging it 11-7 in the 5th end - an impressive scalp for him. Stu Perry had the same issue with Slater, but it took the Ramsey player only 3 ends to dispose of the Peel man. Perry had greater success against the girls however, just pipping Wilma 11-8 in the 5th, and Francesca in the third. Ken Hegarty shone for Peel - beating Wilma 11-6 in the 5th end, Francesca in 3, and perhaps most impressively Adrian Slater, also in 3. Doubles was taken by Stu and Maggie Mulhern in a very close match against Francesca and Wilma 9-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-2, 13-11. This was a creditable result for Peel which leaves them in 3rd position in Division 2, having the same number of points as Tower B.
Arbory B (9) Arbory C (1)
Dan Levine had a highly successful evening in this tie, as did Arbory B teammate Jane Kneale. Dan has had a few close defeats of late but last week it was his turn to taste success. Against the in-form Dave Bufton the scoreline was 11-4, 8-11, 11-4, 8-11, 11-7 for young Dan - and an excellent clean sweep! Jane Kneale also managed 3 wins for the home side. Her third and final game against Sonja went to 13-11, and she then overcame an off-colour Drewry also in 3. IN her final outing she impressively disposed of Bufton 12-10 in the 4th end. Desmonds Douglas A (10) Travellers D (0)
Russell Kent, Neil Ronan, and Brandon Montgomery made short work of the unfortunate Travellers trio of Adrian Tinkler, Grant Paterson and Jackie Gill, with most matches being settled in 3 ends. The doubles was claimed by Messrs Kent & Montgomery against Paterson & Tinkler, in a closely fought 3 ends, 12-10, 11-9, 11-8. This win consolidates Desmond’s 4th place standing in the second division.
Division 3
Ramsey E (1) Tower House (4)
Ramsey’s Lisa Lord had a good win against Cameron Millar taking the match in 4 ends, but she had less success against Paul Mitchinson who took the win 11-5, 11-4, 11-7. Tony Sewell was unable to cope with the skills of Millar and Mitchinson, losing in straight ends. The doubles was taken by the Tower House pairing in 3 ends. This win stretches Tower House’s lead at the top and makes them firm favourites for promotion, even at this early stage.
Ramsey F (0) IOM Junior Development (5)
Henry da Silva was unable to repel the exuberance of youth, with young Henry Weaver blasting his way past the Ramsey player in straight ends. In his match with Sydnie Weaver he was unfortunately taken ill at one game apiece, so the match was forfeited in favour of Sydnie. We wish Henry well in his recovery. Prior to that, the doubles was taken by the young Weaver siblings 14-12, 11-4, 11-4.
IOM Junior Development A (3) IOM Junior Development C (2)
