Weekly Press Report - Week 12

Headline: Ramsey C make their move in Division 2 table tennis

Week 12 of the IOMTTA table tennis fixtures took place at the NSC Secondary Hall last week, with plenty of exciting action to be seen on both Wednesday and Friday sessions. Spectators are always welcome.

Division 1

Tower A (0) Travellers A (9)

Scott Lewis, Malcolm Cummings and Liam Chan were again in supreme form for Travellers. Scott had been in action in the UK league recently alongside other leading Island players, and with Chan and Cummings, dealt Tower a major blow with their second 9-0 drubbing in consecutive weeks. Mike Bayley, Ken Mitchell and Dave Parsons were no match for Lewis, losing in straight games. Cummings met a little more resistance from Mitchell, eventually winning in the 4th end. Chan then beat Bayley and Parsons in straight games, whilst Mitchell took him to a 4th end. Travellers A remain in second place, 12 points behind Ramsey A, whilst Tower A remain in 8th place.

Ramsey B (0) Ramsey A (9)

Will Dalugdugan, Becky Taylor and Chris Holmes faced a tough test coming up against league leaders Ramsey A. Chris Holland kept a clean sheet for the away side, with straight games wins against Taylor and Dalugdugan, with Holmes stretching him a little before falling in the 4th end. Duncan Alexander was also pushed hard by Holmes but pulled through 12-10, 6-11, 12-10, 11-6. Duncan was also taken to 4 by Becky. Finally for the away team, Adam Teare was again in impressive form, crushing Dalugdugan and Holmes in straight games, before edging past Taylor in the 4th end 14-12, 11-5, 9-11, 11-7.

Copy Shop A (1) Arbory (8)

The Copy Shop trio of Sasha Thomas, Sonja Shaw and Malcolm Lambert, had a torrid time against 3rd placed Arbory. Sonja and Malcolm had kindly agreed to play up in this fixture, and acquitted themselves well - in fact Malcolm had a tremendous victory over the talented youngster Amit Lannin, winning 11-13, 11-3, 6-11, 11-7, 11-5. Sonja also tested the youngster, before falling in the 4th end. Jason Quirk and Khayee Vinas were Arbory's other 2 players and each won all 3 of their matches in straight games, albeit Sasha did well to push Jason in his second game 10-12, and Sonja puished Khayee in her second game, before losing out 12-14. Copy Shop remains in 7th place, whilst Arbory are in 3rd place.

Travellers B (7) Strathallan (2)

John Shooter was ruthless once again in his dispatch of the opposition. This week it was Strathallan's Andy Paterson, Wayne Taylor, and Ege Niyazi who were in the firing line - each falling in straight games. Next up for the home side was Malc Lewis who played well but ultimately lost in the 5th end to Paterson. He was also taken to a final game decider against Taylor, but this time  edged it 11-7 in the 5th. His match against young Ege went to a 4th end before the experienced Lewis took the win. Will Shooter kept up his tremendous form with a fabulous win against Taylor, edging it 11-9 in the 5th, before taking out Ege in 4 ends. Patterson then notched Strahallans' second point with a win in 3 ends against young Will.

Tower B (6) Peel A (3)

Paul Callow was in top form with 3 solid wins against Peel's RonanThompson, Ken Hegarty and Stuart Perry. Thompson and Perry managed to get a game off Callow and the first 2 sets against Hegarty were close, but other than that Paul must take great satisfaction from his 3 points. Elsewhere for Tower, Steve Curtis did well to sweep aside Thompson in straight games before being pushed very hard by a determined Hegarty, before just edging it 11-9 in the 5th end. He had less joy against Perry however, losing out in the 4th end. Perry also had a tremendous win against Simon Radcliffe 11-8, 7-11, 12-10, 11-6. The win for Tower B keeps them in 9th place, but narrows the gap between themselves and Tower A to 8 points.

Division 2

Travellers C (2) Ramsey C (8)

Table toppers Travellers C suffered a setback with this result. They had Grant Paterson playing up, but nevertheless Ramsey C did extremely well to take 8 points and move into 3rd spot, just 3 points behind Copy Shop D. Nathan Walker had a thrilling win against Keeran Chan coming back from 2-0 down, to take the final 3 ends 12-10, 11-9, 11-9. He had another epic encounter, this time against David Buck. This match also went to 5 ends, with Nathan taking the final 2 games 12-10, 13-11 - amazing determination and effort from the Ramsey player. Tim Baker then added to the home side's woes by taking 3 points, sweeping aside Chan, Paterson and Buck in 3 ends. Wilma Dalugdugan added a point by defeating Paterson, but was stopped in her tracks by David Buck in 3 ends, and by Chan in 4 ends. The doubles went to Baker & Walker - another 5 set classic against Chan & Buck, with Ramsey edging it 11-6 in the final end.

Peel B (3) Desmonds Douglas A (7)

John Taylor-Burt had a fabulous 3 wins for the home side in this tie. He managed to beat Brandon Montgomery, Russell Kent and Tommy Cowin in 3 ends each - no mean feat. His match against Cowin was really close though - 11-9, 11-9, 12-10. Unfortunately, his team mates Vlad Lannin and Bob Borland were unable to do the same, all losing to the Desmond's trio in straight games. The doubles went to 4 ends, with Kent & Montgomery edging past Lannin and Taylor-Burt in the 4th end after losing the first game.

Copy Shop B (8) Desmonds Douglas B (2)

Sonja Shaw was in great form for the home side, racking up 3 wins. Against Michaela Duchonova she needed 4 ends, against Richard Hill she needed 3 ends, and against Neil Ronan she was pushed hard, just getting past him 5-11, 16-14, 11-9, 10-12, 11-8. Her team mates Malcolm Lambert and JP Banaag backed her up well, bagging 2 points each. Lambert swept aside Michaela and Richard in 3 ends, but the wily Ronan was too much for him, losing out in the 3rd end to the Desmond's player. Banaag was pushed hard by an improving Duchonova, only pipping her 11-9 in the final end. He had a relatively easier time against Hill, taking the match 12-10 in the 3rd end. Lambert then teamed up with Sonja and took the doubles in efficient style 11-4, 11-9, 11-6.

Copy Shop C (8) Ramsey D (2)

Copy Shop C had an excellent win in this tie against quality opposition. Kevin Drewry chalked up 3 points with a 4 set win over Wilma Dalugdugan, then against Lisa Lord and Francesca Lord, both in 3 ends. Rob Wright added a point by beating Lisa in 3, but came a cropper against young Wilma, losing the match in the 5th end 10-12 - an excellent win for Wilma. Francesca added to Wright's misery when she managed to beat him in 3 ends. Dan Levine had 3 fabulous wins for the home side with wins in 3 against Lisa, and in 4 against Francesca. He was pushed all the way by Wilma, before finally edging it 11-7 in the 5th. Kevin & Dan then teamed up well to take the doubles against Francesca and Wilma in 4 games.

Division 3

Ramsey F (3) Tower C (7)

Tower C did well in this tie to take 7 points, with good wins chalked up by Mike Chapman, Margaret Forsyth and Barry Jenkins which kept them comfortably in second place in Division 3. MIke Chapman had eased to victory in 3 ends against both Robin Burchill and Geoff Burchill, but was stopped in his tracks by Keith Herrington who did well to take the 5th end, and the match, after losing the 4th 1-11! Herrington also had an excellent win over Barry Jenkins 11-9, 8-11, 13-11, 11-5. This was only Barry's second loss of the season, so full marks to Keith. Geoff Burchill added a third point for the home side with a superb win over Margaret Forsyth, squeezing through 13-11 in the final end. Margaret's hard bat flat hitting style didn't suit Herrington though, and she took the honours in 3 games. Doubles went to Chapman & Jenkins in 3 over Henry da Silva and Keith Herrington.

Junior Development North (0) Travellers D (10)

Caitlin Henery took a game off Traveller's Jackie Gill before losing in the 4th end. Other than that, she and youngsters William Humphreys and Ben Hulbert were beaten in 3 games in each match by the experienced Travellers team of Maurice Campbell, Grant Paterson and Gill. The doubles was also settled in 3 ends in favour of Campbell & Paterson over Henery & Hulbert. Travellers D remain in first place in the table.

IOM Junior Development (3) Ramsey E (7)

Youngster Luke Begley continues to improve on a weekly basis. He managed to beat Ramsey's Ian Barnes in 4 ends, and newcomer Chuan Fu in 3. He could not get past Roland Bouchat however, losing in the 3rd. Roland added wins against Liav Lannin and Max Doyle in 3 ends. Barnes added 2 points for Ramsey by beating Liav and Max in 3 ends. The match between Max and Chuan involved some close games but was taken by Chuan 11-4, 11-8, 11-7. Doubles went to Darren Shaw and Barnes in the night's closest match, being settled 12-10 in favour of Ramsey.
