Match Report

Once again. I am indebted to John Clark for the following match report :-

Chatham Furious came back from 4 - 1 down to snatch a 6 - 4 victory in this proverbial 'game of two halves’. The evening started well for Boxley, with the evergreen Steve Neilson defeating home skipper John Clark in 4 and then, despite Craig Greenfield losing to Zhong Jiao Tan, they opened up a good lead with wins for Craig Simmons against Liuyun Guo, Steve against Tan and Craig against John. Liu managed to stop the rot for Furious with a hard-fought five-set victory over Shane, followed by Tan beating the impressive Craig surprisingly comfortably; this made the overall score 4 - 3 and it was now up to Steve Neilsen to deliver the coup de grace for Boxley… except he didn’t. Table tennis can be a ‘funny old game’ and Liu, who looked out of sorts in his first two games of the night, scored an impressive and surprising three-set victory to level matters. There followed a dour struggle between John and the luckless Shane, that eventually ended in an epic fifth set which the former took 20 - 18. Tan and Liu, who are a very experienced and competent doubles pairing, won the last point in three to complete a victory that hadn’t looked likely an hour before.
