BLISLAND extended their lead at the top of Division One of the North Cornwall Table Tennis League with a 7-3 victory over North Hill last Thursday night. All three of their players, Robert Thompson, James Rickwood and Kevin Tarling, won two of their three matches with Shirley Luckhurst, who finished with the league’s best average last term, winning all of her three outings.
Blisland are now 13 points ahead of Budehaven A who lost 6-4 at Torridge. Peter Freeburn was the star of the show for the home side, winning three out of three in the singles while David Stone also won two. Dave Salisbury was in fine form for Budehaven, and was only denied a perfect evening on a personal front by losing a last set shootout with Freeburn.
In Division Two, Helland B continue to set the pace following an 8-2 hammering of nearest challengers Budehaven C. Although four of the singles went to deciding sets, it was Helland, led by skipper Stephen Lehan and the returning David Maclennan who emerged victorious, as they both won all of their respective matches. A special mention should also go to regular Budehaven D team member Nathan Jukes who was involved in two five-setters on his first appearance at that level.
The clash of the unbeaten sides in Division Three ended with a shock 5-0 victory for North Hill C over previous leaders Bridgerule A, who were missing their star player, Alan Quilter.
In the week’s other matches, Helland C edged past Budehaven D 3-2, for whom Nathan Jukes continued his 100% record at this level, while North Hill D also picked up a victory, a 4-1 success at Bridgerule C, with Hannah Luckhurst enjoying both of her matches.
