The only significant result this week was that of Newton Bishops’ defeat of Bishops Academicals, 5-2, in the Dyment Doubles Semi-Final, to set up a Final encounter with the strong Torbay Table Tennis Academy First team to be played later this month.
Brixham Table Tennis Club are catching up on earlier postponements in the league, but the Sharks, challenging for the top of the first division, are yet to play their crucial games.
At the weekend the Annual Closed Tournament took place. With a good entry of 36 players including all the top local players, a high quality, exciting day was anticipated and we were not disappointed. The highlight was the Open Singles final played between Stamatis Kioufis and Kris Piwowar. Kioufis, undefeated for 3 years locally, found himself at the wrong end of a 5-11, 9-11, 9-11 scoreline as Kris Piwowar powered himself to the title, an excellent match of high quality table tennis the likes of which have not been witnessed in this tournament before. Jo Piwowar defeated Jazmin Johns in the final of the Ladies Singles and then teamed up with husband Kris to take the Mixed Doubles title. There was a 12th consecutive Veteran’s title for Dennis Gibbs (16 in all), who defeated Patrik Cincala in an exciting 5 setter. Full results below
