SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE

There were fine 9-1 wins by the top 2 sides in the First Division both over opponents fighting for their survival near the foot of the table. Leaders Denbury Imports saw off Brixham Gulls, while second-placed NA Batmen defeated Halwell. Rory Harries & Yan Tushingham gained maximums for the Denbury side, with Mick Mercer’s victory over Giles Tushingham earning the Gulls’ point. Nick Halse & Dennis Gibbs were unbeaten for the Batmen, while Halwells’ Dave Wadling’s win over Shaun Gibbs collected a point for Halwell. In the all-Torbay Academy clash, the 2^nd team, with Javier Garcia unbeaten on his league debut, defeated the 1^st team 7-3.

Brixham Pirates’ convincing 9-1 win over Taverners puts them level at the top with clubmates Brixham Imports. Taverners fought all the way winning 11 singles games against Holly Johns, Brian Pengelly & Clive Banham, but failed to take a set, with their point coming in the final doubles. Marldon kept their interest at the top with a 7-3 victory over basement side Denbury Tykes. Dave Atkin was again unbeaten for Marldon, and Martin Dilkes fought well for the Tykes’ 3 points, aided by Pat Darch in the doubles.  NA Eagles could not defeat Dawlish Aces’ Dave Davies but managed to come away from Dawlish with a 6-4 win.

Marldon Tykes’ march towards the Third Division title continued with a 10-0 whitewash over bottom side Dawlish Drifters, the gap widening as 2^nd placed Brixham Diamonds were held to a draw by Torre Bats, whose Tony Nguyen recorded another maximum. NA Hawks move up to 3^rd with skipper Mike Coxhead leading the way as his side defeated Dawlish Diamonds 7-3. Torbay Academy 4 with an 8-2 win over NA Falcons are in 4^thplace, with Jerry Hollings and Ben Hoare undefeated for the Academy side.  

Fourth Division leaders, Torbay Academy 6, defeated stablemates Academy 5 by 6-4 to record their 9^th victory of the season, Curtis Sage remains unbeaten for Academy 6. Second-placed NA Kestrels also secured a 6-4 win over Brixham Panthers thanks to a Peter Tarjan maximum, well supported by Harry Usher. Third-placed NA Kites, with Richard Salt in fine form, defeated basement side Pure Torre 8-2.
