ALBANY FLORISTS-SPONSORED SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE
A busy week in the First Division for the top 2 sides with 2 matches each. Leaders, Torbay Academy 1, even without their captain Kris Piwowar, defeated one of their closest rivals NA Batmen 6-4. The Academy’s Patrik Cincala lost his 100% average, beaten by Batmen Dennis Gibbs and Naomi Jackson, but Paul Myatt was in top form and saw the Academy home with a fine maximum. The Academy 1 side then whitewashed Brixham Gulls in their other match, to open up an 18-point lead at the top Second-placed NA Buzzards returned from Torbay Academy with an 8-2 win over the Academy’s 2nd team, and the following night whitewashed Brixham Pirates. Kevin Nicholls, Jon Cheung and Sonja Ryland were in fine form for the Buzzards who now have a 10-point lead over clubmates Batmen in 3rd place. It doesn’t get any better for the basement side Brixham Pirates, as they suffered another whitewash at the hands of Halwell.

Just the one 2nd Division match as the Taverners continue to improve, picking up a fine 6-4 victory over the Battlers.
The 3rd Division saw runaway leaders Denbury Tykes extend their lead at the top to 27 points, with a 10-0 victory over NA Kestrels. Paul Hine, yet to be beaten, along with father and son Pat and Huw Darch were in scintillating form for the Tykes. The Denbury Tykes’ colleagues from Marldon also recorded a whitewash victory, Hasbeens being their victims, as Steve Metcalfe, Kevin Ayling and Chris Garner were playing well for the Marldon Tykes. Basement side Torbay Academy 5 looked to be on their way to a first win of the season 5-2 up against Dawlish Diamonds, but a Martin Charlesworth maximum inspired the Diamonds’ recovery and a share of the points.

Three Dyment Doubles matches also took place. There were 5-1 wins for Taverners over Brixham Swifts and for Torbay Academy 3 over Torres R Us. The match of the round was a close encounter between Brixham Trawlers and NA Ospreys. 4th Division NA Ospreys, Rob Ferguson, Sam Hiles & Ollie Pead, found themselves 4-2 down against an experienced Trawlers team, but kept going for their shots and eventually turned it around to win 5-4 and progress to the quarter finals.
