SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE – SPONSORED BY ALBANY FLORISTS

PRESS REPORT – Sunday 3rd Feb

With no scheduled league fixtures and some cup matches postponed due to the weather, only a handful of matches took place this week.

The Handicap team cups - the Singles Challenge cup and the Dyment doubles shield threw up some very competitive close matches.

The NA Falcons team of Jeremy Broad, Chris Baron & Mike Kavanagh were involved in two close matches.  In the doubles they just lost out by 13 points, (338-351) to club colleagues NA Kites. The lead changed hands 5 times in this encounter with the Kites team of Lewis Short, Richard Salt and Josh Redfern holding their nerve to win the last 3 close sets.  The Falcons fared better at Torre against the Tigers in the singles cup, with it all square at 222-222 at the end of the 6th set. This time the Falcons came on strong in the final 3 sets, to win the match by 12 points (333-321).

In another excellent singles cup match the Hasbeens, Alan Tyrrell, Richard Fitzgerald and Mike Wickens, went into the final set on the same number of points as the Dawlish Diamonds. Alan Tyrrell’s victory in the final set over Bruce Freeman clinching it for the Hasbeens by 14 points (347-333)

In an all Newton Abbot affair in the singles cup, the Kestrels were far too strong for the Vultures, Derek Stratton, Robert Williams and Peter Tarjan winning at a canter!  It was not a good week for the Vultures who also bowed out of the Dyment Doubles, to another Newton Abbot side, although they did put up a good fight in this one, eventually going down by 45 points to the Hawks team of Dave Doxsey, Pete Sercombe and Doug Morgan.

Finally, in the knockout competitions, the NA Buzzards team of Sonja Ryland, Kevin Nicholls and Tony Halse defeated Torbay Academy 3 by 66 points in the Dyment Doubles. Despite initially going ahead the Academy side could not sustain their good start against a consistent Buzzards team who made few errors.

There was one league match which saw Torbay Academy 3 go to the top of the 3rd Division following a 6-4 victory over the Academy’s 4th team, Lucas Bradshaw with a fine maximum for the Academy 3 side.
