SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE – SPONSORED BY ALBANY FLORISTS

PRESS REPORT – Sunday 10^th Mar

With no league fixtures originally scheduled this was a quiet week for most teams. A number of rearranged league fixtures and cup matches did take place.

In the first division the leaders, Torbay Academy 1, defeated the NA Buzzards 6-4. The Academy without the Piwowars and the Buzzards without all 3 of their normal starting line up still served up an excellent match which could’ve gone either way. An excellent Patrik Cincala maximum won it for the Academy who stretch their lead at the top to 20 points. The Brixham Sharks team of Gordon Holmes, Clive Banham and Bob Parkins whitewashed a battling Halwell who were unlucky not to grab a couple of points.

There was a great effort from the Denbury Tykes, adrift at the foot of the second division table, as they held Brixham Pirates to a 5-5 draw. Nicholas Shipley with a maximum for the Pirates

Marldon Tykes stretched their lead at the top of the third division with a couple of excellent results, just dropping the one point out of twenty. First up they defeated Torbay Academy 5, 9-1 and followed that up with a whitewash victory over Brixham Dolphins. Steve Tyler was undefeated in both encounters, Kevin Ayling, Chris Garner and Steve Metcalfe also recording maximums for the Tykes. The battle just behind the Tykes was won by a Matthew Cooper inspired Torbay Academy 3 who defeated NA Hawks 7-3.

The fourth division title race is almost over as the leaders, Hasbeens, defeated Dawlish Drifters 9-1 and with second placed Torre Titans going down 6-4 at Newton Abbot against the Kites there is now a 31 point gap at the top. Alan Tyrrell and Mike Coxhead were again unbeaten for the dominant Hasbeens team. Titan’s Chris Harper retained his 100% record in the singles, but all the Kites youngsters contributed in their 6-4 victory. In an all Torre Affair, a Carl Tucker maximum for the Tigers helped them defeat the Panthers 8-2.

In the Handicap Challenge Cup there was a terrific win for NA Kites against the fancied Torbay Academy 2 team. Fine attacking play from the Kites youngsters, Josh Redfern, Lewis Short and Richard Salt, who dominated throughout eventually winning 367-311. NA Falcons reached the semi-finals with a close match against Torbay Academy 4. With two sets to play and just 10 points separating the sides, the Falcon’s Chris Baron and Jeremy Broad finished the evening well to claim a 350-321 victory.

In the Dyment Handicap Doubles there was a very comfortable win for NA Hawks in an all Newton Abbot tie as they beat the NA Eagles 376-269. Torbay Academy 2 bounced back from their singles cup defeat with a victory over NA Kestrels 370-323. Torre Tigers team of Jean Neafcy, Steve & Carl Tucker had a fine victory at Torbay Academy over Academy 5 winning 360-316
