PRESS REPORT – Sunday 17^th Mar

The big match this week was between the two Newton Abbot teams trailing behind Torbay Academy in second and third. NA Batmen came out on top against the Buzzards, 6-4, thanks to a superb maximum from Shaun Gibbs.  Mark Burridge was unbeaten for NA Condors as they defeated Brixham Sharks 8-2.  In the battle at the bottom of the table Brixham Gulls closed the gap on Halwell to just three points following a 6-4 victory over the Halwell team, for whom David Wadling was unbeaten.

Second Division leaders Torbay Academy 2, with Esme Suarez & Warren Ngai maximums, defeated NA Falcons 8-2.  An Andy Tyrrell maximum for NA Eagles just about keeps them in the hunt in the runners up spot as they saw off the challenge from Marldon.  Nick Shipley was unbeaten for the Brixham Pirates but it was not enough to secure the victory over bottom side Denbury Tykes as the sides shared the points.  Brixham Trawlers eased their relegation fears with a 6-4 victory over the Taverners, Nick Williamson was on top form for the Trawlers.

The Third Division is very tight following a 10-0 victory by the new leaders Torbay Academy 3 over their clubmates Academy 5. Matt Cooper, Matt Frettsome and Elsa Perry dropping just 3 games on their way to the whitewash victory. Previous leaders Marldon Tykes were held to a 5-5 draw by Dawlish Diamonds.  Third placed NA Hawks, whose challenge has faltered in recent weeks, had an 8-2 victory over clubmates the Kestrels, Matt Cyron in excellent form for the Hawks.  Brixham Dolphins, well adrift at the foot of the table suffered a 9-1 defeat by Torbay Academy 4, Anne Marie Gibbs, Tim Shears and David Rowsell all with maximums for the Academy but the Dolphins came back to win the final doubles.

Fourth Division leaders Hasbeens were without a game but should be the first team to secure a title this season when they face Torre Tigers this week, requiring just 5 points.  Another maximum from Chris Harper, yet to be beaten in the singles this season, saw his Torre Titans to a 6-4 victory over clubmates the Tigers.  In an all Newton Abbot clash the Kites got the better of the Owls, winning 7-3, thanks to a Josh Redfern maximum. Torre Panthers, with Steve Russell and Rob Burridge maximums, defeated Torbay Academy 6, 8-2.

In the fifth division it was top against bottom as Torbay Academy 7 defeated Dawlish Delights 9-1. William Bevan and Kacper Piwowar unbeaten for the Academy.  NA Ospreys kept up their challenge with an 8-2 victory over clubmates the Vultures, Rob Ferguson with another maximum for the Ospreys.  There was an excellent draw, their fifth of the season, for NA Merlins as they held the Seals at Brixham, with Eve James picking up the player of the match award.

In the Challenge Cup, holders, Torbay Academy 1, marched on to the semi finals with a comfortable victory over NA Buzzards and in the Dyment Doubles NA Hawks reached the semi finals with a fine win at Bishopsteignton over the Hasbeens.
