It’s cup week with the first round of the Handicap Challenge Cup taking place. Holders for the last 3 seasons, Torbay Academy 1, started off with a match against NA Harriers and were pushed all the way. Behind at the halfway stage they rallied and had a narrow seven point lead going into the last set. Esmeralda Suarez held her nerve to win the final set and start another Torbay Academy 1 cup run. The Academy second and third teams both go through to the second round with victories over their clubmates Academy four and seven.
Torre Titans had a fine win over Taverners to earn a second round tie against the holders Torbay Academy 1. Torre Table Tennis Club’s other team the Panthers also progressed with a win over Dawlish Diamonds. Closest match of the round saw Halwell defeat Brixham Trawlers by just eight points 339-331.
There were comfortable wins for Newton Abbot teams, the Eagles, Falcons and Kestrels over Brixham Seals, Dawlish Dynamos and clubmates NA Merlins respectively. It was not so easy, but still a victory, for first division NA Condors as they defeated fourth division colleagues NA Ospreys. Generally, despite some hefty handicaps, the higher division teams won, however there was an excellent victory for third division NA Owls at Marldon over their second division opponents, Marldon Tykes.

Four re-arranged league matches also took place. In the first division a Mark Smith maximum for Brixham Gulls ensured a share of the points against NA Eagles.
Two Torbay Academy sides were in action in the second division. The Academy’s second team shared the points with yet to be beaten Denbury Tykes, Lucas Bradshaw winning all his singles for the Academy. The young Torbay Academy 3 side brushed aside the challenge of the experienced Taverners, winning 9-1. Kacper Piwowar and Alessandro Mitranescu were unbeaten, Ivan Vaplaks with two wins, losing out to Martin Dilkes, who claimed Taverner’s solitary point.
It was close, but leaders of the Third Division, Torre Titans, defeated Hasbeens 6-4 thanks to another Chris Harper maximum, inflicting a first defeat of the season on the Hasbeens.
