The League’s showpiece event was expertly staged in Jubilee Hall, Stover School, Newton Abbot with help and support from the school.
Six final events from the weekend’s tournament were held back to be staged along with the presentation of all the league’s awards for the season.
The first event, the veterans singles, was a repeat of last year’s final with a similar result as the hard hitting attack of Dennis Gibbs was too consistent for Kevin Nicholls’ defence, Dennis winning 11-6, 11-6, 11-2.
Next up proved to be the best match of the night as Rhys Lush and Stuart Shipley battled for the Division 2 cup. Rhys fought back well from 2 games down to level at 2-2, and again from well down in the fifth and even had a match point but Stuart got his game back together and finished well to take the final game 12-10.
The mixed doubles was a tad different this year with Andy Guy’s involvement. Wheelchair competitors do not have to play alternate shots and that takes a bit of getting used to for both his partner and their opponents. Andy was partnered by Eve James and they were up against the holders of the mixed doubles cup Kevin Nicholls and Sonja Ryland. Andy and Eve battled well against their more experienced opponents but lost out 8-11, 7-11, 6-11.
The mens doubles saw the Gibbs father and son partnership, Dennis and Shaun, against a scratch pairing put together for the first time on Sunday, Jim McIvor and Ben Hoare. This one too went to form, the Gibbs’s winning 11-3, 11-5, 11-8.
The ladies singles final for the Knight Cup was another encounter between the ladies from the Mixed doubles final, Eve James and Sonja Ryland, and with a similar result. Sonja’s more consistant pushing game proving too much for Eve, 11-7, 11-5, 11-3.
Shaun Gibbs had knocked out his Dad in the semi, while Chris Harper edged out Kevin Nicholls in his semi which pitched Shaun against Chris for the Burton Cup in the last match of the night. Shaun was on his game from the start and didn't give much away. Chris battled well but Shaun’s attacking play kept him ahead eventually winning 11-7, 11-4, 11-6.
In between all the matches awards were handed out by the League’s sponsor, Sonja Ryland (Albany Florists), to winners of divisions, cups, leading averages as well as the Early season tournament and matches played to a conclusion at Sunday’s tournament.
The evening concluded with a couple of special awards given by the League’s Executive Committee. The Alan Parker Cup was awarded to Andy Guy while the Amy Dyment Rose Bowl was presented to Sonja Ryland.
Both well deserved for their efforts on and off the table, locally and nationally.
