Press Report - Season Preview

SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE – SPONSORED BY ALBANY FLORISTS

2023-24 SEASON PREVIEW

The new South Devon and Torbay Table Tennis League gets underway next week with 32 teams playing in 4 divisions, 8 teams in each Division.

Torbay Academy 1 will again be the team to beat as they bid to retain the Division One title they won last season. Their main challengers will again be NA Batmen & NA Buzzards.  There are another three Newton Abbot teams, NA Eagles, a new look NA Condors and the newly formed NA Parrots. Brixham Sharks and Halwell A make up a very strong First Division for the new campaign

Relegated Halwell B will be looking to bounce straight back up into the First Division as second division champions.  The teams most likely to trouble the Halwell outfit will be Dawlish Aces and Brixham Trawlers, both having the potential to win the division. Newton Abbot have three teams in this Division, NA Raptors, NA Falcons with some fresh blood and NA Kestrels who have recruited well in order to step up a division. Hoping to establish themselves in the second division the Totnes based Grove Guerrillas climb another division and a new look Torbay Academy 2, with the nucleus of last season’s Division Three champions, will be looking to make their mark in Division Two.

Similarly to the Second Division it may well be the relegated team, Taverners, that will be the team to beat in the Third Division. Torre Vikings and Brixham Gulls could be their main challengers for the title.  Depending on player availability both NA Hawks and Dawlish Renegades could be up there pushing the top teams. Torbay Academy, very dominant last time out, have two teams, 3 & 4, in this division. NA Harriers complete the line up for the Third Division.

The Fourth division is again split in half with a good number of players/teams with folk new to league table tennis alongside a number of very experienced older players. The champions could well come from Torbay Academy 5 or Torre Gladiators.  The three Newton Abbot teams will be hoping to make an impact, the experienced NA Merlins and NA Ospreys towards the top of the table, while NA Vultures, with a team of newcomers, will be looking to win the odd match!  Brixham Seals, Dawlish Doubtfuls and Torbay Academy 6 all with new players involved will want to establish themselves in the League.

So another excellent league season is anticipated.  Alongside the league matches there will also be the team single and team doubles handicap cup competitions.  The League’s Early Season Tournament is again taking place at the Torbay Leisure Centre on Sunday 12th November and looking well ahead the Closed Tournament is scheduled for Sunday 14th April 2024 also at the Torbay Leisure Centre.

If anyone is interested in getting involved in the local table tennis scene please check out the League’s website where you can find details of the clubs in the area who would give you a warm welcome.
