Match Report
After a very disappointing 2022/23 season, Taverners played their first ever league match in Division 3 in its long and a few say "illustrious" career!!
Well how did we get on?
Firstly, entertaining Brixham Gulls at the Village Hall last night was a pleasurable experience with our former playing colleague and friend Nick W leading the team with the father and daughter combination of Andrew and Issy Brown providing valuable support. Nick, who always seems to play well at Bishopsteignton, narrowly missed out on a maximum.
Issy, playing in the SD&TTTL after a few years "absence" looked promising and played very well in the doubles. Dad Andrew, playing up for Charles Lamden who is on his hols, fought well in supporting the team. Charles will be back for their next match which will surely improve the Gulls results after 2 defeats so far.
Taverners therefore welcomed the new season with a 8-2 win, our first win for a very long time! Martin was "Player of the Match" after the set of the evening against Nick. With lots of exciting rallies and close games, Martin came back from 2-1 down to win 12-10 in the fifth. Unfortunately, I could not replicate the result so after another 5 game set, I lost to NIck having been 2-1 up!
A mention also for Colin who despite suffering from a muscle strain, competed well against Nick and won his other 2 sets. Well done Colin.
I finish my report in mentioning the doubles which was another exciting set. Nick and Issy who narrowly lost to the Harriers doubles pair last week, lost again in 5 this time to Martin and myself but not before being ahead 2-1 and causing us lots of problems! I vouch there will not be many better doubles sets played in Division 3 this season.
An enjoyable evening with good banter/conversation. Both teams will look forward to the return fixture in January.
