After our hard- fought draw against title favourites Torre Vikings last Friday, it was back to winning ways for Taverners with a 7-3 win against the Hawks at the Village Hall. A 10.25 finish and with majority of the sets over 4 and 5 games, it was an interesting evening to say the least - no further comment required.
How have Taverners found their first ever season in Division 3?
I think the standard of play is pretty high (others may disagree) with no room for complacency as all matches have been competitive as one would expect. Most of the matches have been enjoyable too with good banter and sportsmanship to the fore. It is also been pleasant to play against different teams and "new" players. A few more league matches in future seasons would be excellent if this could be achieved but I know how difficult that can be?!
As for us players, Martin has been in imperious form with 19 wins out of 21 and has spearheaded the Taverners results. With excellent use of his bat/rubbers, players find him awkward to play against. Martin also practices more than most players and thoroughly deserves his success - long may it continue!
Colin, after his injury problems, has come back well and his performances against the Vikings and the Hawks have been very promising. I am sure there is more to come and I am sure Colin thinks so too......
My own performances have been mixed with too many losses from potentially winning positions. In the second half of the season, I need to win to few more of these close sets to support Martin/Colin and try and challenge Torre Vikings. I must also say that Colin and I still enjoy playing table tennis at our age and want to carry on for as long as possible so other players beware!!
Finally, thanks again Tony for your efforts and the rest of League Committee. Meanwhile I hope everyone, players and officials alike, has a great Christmas and an enjoyable 2024."
