The 2017 / 18 West Somerset Table Tennis League commenced with relatively few matches being played. The momentum will soon build and the teams’ positions in the tables will then become clearer.
Only two teams have reported their results so far....
Last year’s division 1 winners, Wiveliscombe, opened their account at Gnomads with a winning score of 32 - only four points short of the maximum. The match was far from one-sided with an outstanding performance from Gnomads’ Mel Horner, with every singles game he played going to five sets. Mel ended the evening with 7 points, closely followed by Martin Rant with 6 - excellent results against last year’s top team. With many of his games being won by a narrow margin it was John Edbrooke who ended the evening on a maximum in both singles and doubles. With only one division 1 match recorded this week it is Wiveliscombe that are at the top of the table.... again....
In division 2 Mad Batters had a closely fought battle with Allsorts and managed to hold onto their early advantage to win by 26 – 20. Matthew Short completed a fine maximum and was well supported by his brother Jamie, who scored 7 points. Most games were very close throughout the match. Barbara Parker excelled in the doubles to gather a fine 6 points for Allsorts, to add to her singles total of 4. Barbara’s points tally for the evening has ensured that her bat will not be burned for the foreseeable future....
