Division 1– House Martyns were back to winning ways when they entertained Shooting Stars. It was captain Scott Milton’s dead bat that won the evening and scoring another maximum plus the player of the match award. Joe Burt was denied his maximum despite a spectacular final point in the fourth set, leaving him to settle for 8 points. Jack Lancaster added a further 2 singles points. With 5 points in the doubles House Martins came out on top with 24 points. Shooting Stars played steadily throughout the match. Geoff Williams’ mosquito bites meant he was scratching around for points against the opposition’s captain, however, he led the way for the team with a singles score of 6 points. Captain Martin Shoots scored 4 and Kerry Manicom added a further 3 points. Shooting stars got the better of the doubles with 7 points but it was not enough to avoid ending the match in second place with a score of 20 points.
Wiveliscombe vs. Minehead A was the closest division 1 match of the season so far. John Edbrooke top scored for the home team with 8 points and Paul Nutkins added 5. 13-year-old Ben Cooper was still replacing veteran David Woodland, adding 3 to the singles tally. A slight advantage in the doubles with 6 points gave Wiveliscombe a winning score of 22 points to maintain the lead of the first division. For the visitors it was Toby Kerslake that took the evening by storm and managed the only maximum, and a well-deserved player of the match award too. Joe Camp also played exceptionally well, adding a further 7 points against the reigning champions. David Veale added an important singles point. With only 4 doubles points Minehead fell one short of the home team’s total with 21 points.
Gnomads entertained White Horse and galloped to a convincing victory. Martin Rant top-scored with the only maximum, to get the player of the match award. Close support came from Nigel Foster with an excellent 8 points. Eddie Ferris added a further 3 singles points. With maximum doubles points Gnomads cantered to a final score of 29. From the off, White Horse never got into their stride. Most of their running came from David Bryant with 6 singles points, plus 3 points from Ian Rew. With only 1 doubles point from the evening White Horse crossed the finishing line with 10 points.
Division 2– Allsorts started their campaign this week with a determined start. Overall, they were a mere 2 points away from a perfect score. Sifa Vea and ‘new boy’ Roy Pointer both achieved maximums and Sifa was awarded player of the match. Well done Roy on your excellent debut. Mike Lawrie added a valuable 7 points. Barbara Parker was the doubles specialist, helping the team to again score maximum points. Final tally for Allsorts was 34 points. Drifters were under pressure throughout the whole match and responded with 5 points from Liz Fletcher, 2 points from Andrew Miles and 1 point from singles substitute Alan Blackmore. Trevor Stockdale was the doubles specialist, but the team could only reply with 4 doubles points. Final score for Drifters – 12 points.
Final match to report this week was a ‘battle of the ‘boys’’, between hosts Barn Boys and Roy’s Boys. It was also a game of extremes. Barn Boys struggled to get going in their singles games. Steve Palmer scored 3, Andy Fay 2 and Geoff Dibble 1 point. In the doubles it was a different story with an unopposed maximum 9 points, to give Barn Boys a score of 15 points at the end of the evening. Visitors, Roy’s Boys were completely dominant in the singles with Barry and Roy Hooper and Diana Garner all scoring maximum points. Barry was awarded player of the match. That was however where the score remained as no doubles points were added. In the end it was a convincing win for Roy’s Boys with 27 points.
