Basement Dwellers | Minehead A | 27 - 20 |
Barn Boys | Space Invaders | 19 - 24 |
Division 1– This week saw the climax of the division 1 season as the last, and deciding, match was played. Basement Dwellers needed 23 points to clinch the championship as they faced Minehead A at the Lawns.
This match turned out to be a gruelling battle as ‘Dwellers fought for glory. It was player of the match, Mike Vickery, who led the way by scoring the only maximum of the evening with some outstanding play. Vince Court found the going difficult and scored 6, with Paul Rees adding a further 4 singles points. The singles tally fell short of the required points total, meaning the championship depended on the doubles. It was here that ‘Dwellers were at their best on the night as they just missed a maximum, with 8 doubles points scored. This gave Basement Dwellers a final match score of 27 points, and the division 1 championship.
Minehead A were persistent throughout the match with Toby Kerslake scoring 8 and Joe Camp 7 singles points. The doubles could not be described as one-sided as a further 5 doubles points were added by Minehead. This gave Minehead a score of 20 points at the end of a very long evening, elevating them to third spot in division 1.
Division 2– The final division 2 match of the season was between Barn Boys and Space Invaders. For the ‘Boys’ Steve Palmer top-scored with 7 closely followed by Graham Lamacraft with 6 and a further singles point from Geoff Dibble. With 5 doubles points added this gave Barn Boys a final total of 19 points. Space Invaders’ star of the evening was, player of the match, Matt Lawrence who managed the only maximum of the encounter. Margo Baker had success with her new bat and scored 4, with Jim Stiles adding a further 3 singles points. This match was won again on the doubles score. Narrowly missing a maximum, the 8 doubles points gave Space Invaders a winning score of 24 points.
