Division 1– Current division 1 champions, Wiveliscombe, were in action this week against Gnomads. John Edbrooke led the way for the home team and his maximum earned him the player of the match award. Paul Nutkins narrowly missed his maximum with 8 points, and David Woodland added a further 6. Doubles were evenly contested and, with 5 scored, this raised Wiveliscombe’s tally to a winning 28 points. Gnomads’ stand-out player was Martin Rant who made every opponent fight hard for their points. Martin narrowly missed his maximum with 8 points. Nigel Foster and George Harrow added 2 and 1 singles points respectively. With 6 doubles points Gnomads ended the evening on 17 points.
Shooting Stars were still missing regular players through injury when they entertained White Horse. Captain, Martin Shoots, played his best singles of the season, and a thrilling 5 set show-down against David Bryant gave Martin his maximum and the player of the match award. Robin Arkell added a further 4 singles points. Jim Stiles kindly acted as substitute for the evening and helped add a further 4 valuable doubles points to give Shooting Stars a final score of 17 points. White Horse dominated the match and dropped only 4 points during the entire evening. David Bryant and Ian Rew each scored 8 and Colin White 7 singles points. A maximum in the doubles gave White Horse a significant victory with 32 points.
Division 2– Only one match to report this week when Barn Boys took on Allsorts. Barn Boys played steadily all night but never overcame their opponents. Graham Lamacraft just missed his maximum with 8 points and Steve Palmer scored 5 and Andy Fay 3 singles points. There was little success in the doubles which yielded a modest 2 points to give Barn Boys a final score of 18 points. Allsorts dominated the match from the start and Mike Lawrie scored the only singles maximum of the evening to receive the player of the match award. The ambidextrous Sifa Vea added an excellent 8 points and Roy Pointer a further 5. Barbara Parker was the doubles specialist for Allsorts which yielded maximum doubles points and a final winning score of 31 points.

The final games in the group stage of the knockout cup were played this week. Drifters had a convincing victory over Hawks with a margin of 46 points. The gains for the home team were made by Mike Pretty with 38 and Liz Fletcher with 9. Full credit must be given to Alfie Southam who played to his handicap and made a net gain of 2 points during the evening for Hawks.
It was an ‘all boys’ affair in Dunster when Barn Boys hosted Roy’s Boys. The journey was worthwhile for the visitors as Roy Hooper made a gain of 39 and Barry Hooper 15 points. This gave Roy’s Boys the winning margin of 16 points.
Final match in this round was also the closest of the competition so far when Space Invaders landed at White Horse. There was nothing between the two teams all night but there were two stand-out players. For White Horse it was David Bryant with a gain of 19 points and, for Space Invaders, it was the ever-improving Matt Lawrence with a gain of 18 points. This enabled Space Invaders to take the win by a mere 3 points.
With the group stage complete the quarter final line-up will be as follows:
Barn Boys vs Basement Dwellers
White Horse vs House Martyns
Allsorts vs Space Invaders
Drifters vs Roy’s Boys
