Division 1

The only first division match in the West Somerset League this week was a close-run battle as Shooting Stars hosted Gnomads. The home team demonstrated more consistency than seen in previous weeks as they played against the current division 1 leaders. Geoff Williams led the way for the home team with 7 singles points and Martin Shoots returned to form this week with a valuable 5. The final 2 singles points being added by Robin Arkell. There was little between the teams in the doubles and, with 5 points scored, Shooting Stars ended the evening with a total of 19 – sufficient to lift them out of the relegation zone.

Gnomads failed to dominate the proceedings and the two teams were neck and neck all evening. Captain, Martin Rant scored the only maximum of the night to receive the player of the match award. Nigel Foster had to work hard for his 6, and Steve Wells added a valuable 5 singles points. The visitors came out on top in the doubles with a fine 7 points. With only 3 games to play on the scorecard Shooting Stars were ahead by a single point. Unfortunately, that was when the home team’s scoring ability ended, leaving Gnomads to claim the last 9 points of the match. With a winning total of 27 points, Gnomads extend their lead at the top of division 1.

Division 2

Junior-based Hawkes hosted on-form Minehead Breakaways at the Lawns. Captain, Mark Scyner spearheaded the attack but narrowly missed a maximum, scoring 8. Alfie Southam had to work hard throughout the match for the remaining 4 singles points. Nathaniel Southam was the doubles specialist, but the visitors proved too formidable, restricting the home side to a single doubles point. Final score for Hawks: 13 points.

Breakaways dominated proceedings, led by Andy Godfrey who scored the only maximum of the evening for the player of the match award. Arnould Guilliard scored an excellent 8, and Andy Berry a solid 6 singles points. With maximum doubles points, Minehead Breakaways had a final tally of 32 points elevating them back to the top of the division 2 league table.
