Division 1
Wiveliscombe had a busy week as they were catching up with previously postponed matches. Their first match saw White Horse have an outing to conclude their season. The home team are favourites for the division 1 title and needed to notch up a high score in this match. This they did in style with maximums from David Woodland and John Edbrooke, plus 8 singles sets from Paul Nutkins. Player of the match went to David for his unopposed maximum. Another maximum in the doubles gave Wiveliscombe the score of 35 points for a decisive victory.
With top-class opposition, White Horse were not really at the races, never leaving the starting gate until the halfway point of the match. By this time Wiveliscombe were already in the distance and continually pulling away. When their race began, the only starter for White Horse was David Bryant who passed the finishing post with the team’s 4 singles sets.
Wiveliscombe’s second match was against beleaguered Plan B who played their farewell match after playing the season with one of their key players missing due to injury. The home team, comprising David Woodland, John Edbrooke and Paul Nutkins, each scored singles maximums with John Edbrooke receiving the player of the match award. A maximum in the doubles gave Wiveliscombe a grand-slam score of 36 points to almost guarantee them the division 1 title. Plan B put up a strong fight and the home team had to work hard for their victory. Geoff Williams top-scored with a modest 2 singles sets, with the final singles set being added by Liz Fletcher who kindly substituted for the injured Robin Arkel. Plan B’s season was always going to be difficult with only two players and this match, and bottom of the table position, signals the demise of the team. It has to be seen whether additional recruits can be found to see if a team can be resurrected in time for next season.
Division 2
Roy’s Boys concluded their season with a good performance when Drifters visited Bampton. Barry Hooper was player of the match with a maximum, with Paul Sams adding 5 singles sets and Roy Hooper 4. The home team got the better of the doubles with 7 sets, giving Roy’s Boys the victory with 25 points.
Drifters battled away with both Liz Fletcher and David Smith winning 7 singles sets apiece. Andrew Miles is still getting to grips with his new bat and only managed to prevail in 1 singles set. With 5 doubles sets, Drifters ended the evening on 20 points and one final match to play.
