Division 1
Gnomads started off this week’s round of matches when they hosted Wiveliscombe. This was always going to be a tough match against one of the division 1 title contenders as the home team were without their top-scoring captain, Martin Rant. Throughout the match Gnomads made their opponents work hard for every set. Dave O’Connell had the most success with three singles sets, with Tony Brooks and, substitute for the evening, Geoff Williams each managing to add one singles set to the scoreline. Dave and Geoff combined in the doubles to glean one final set to conclude the evening for Gnomads with 6 points. The scorecard recorded that the hosts lost 9 sets by the minimum of 2 points, the final tally for Gnomads could have been significantly greater had those opportunities been converted.
Wiveliscombe prevailed throughout the match. John Edbrooke exploited his pimpled bat and his maximum earned him the player of the match award. David Woodland also scored a maximum, with the singles scoring completed by Paul Nutkins with 8 sets. A doubles maximum gave Wiveliscombe a comprehensive victory with 35 points.
In their quest for top spot in the table, Allsorts entertained White Horse. From the off, Allsorts pulled out a commanding lead. Out in front was Scott Milton, who’s maximum earned him the player of the match award. Scott was neck and neck with Curtis King, also with a maximum that will boost his averages. A short length behind was the ambidextrous Sifa Vea with a solid 6 singles sets. There was a further maximum in the doubles which meant Allsorts romped home the winners with 33 points, and a top-of-the-table spot.
White Horse never got into their stride throughout the evening and it was David Bryant that made all the running in the singles with all 5 of the team’s sets. Ian Rew and Jamie Robertson joined the race in the doubles and managed to help close the gap by winning 5 sets. As White Horse crossed the finishing line with a final score for 10 points, their opponents were already in the winners’ enclosure.
Division 2
Roy’s Boys travelled over the hills to Minehead to play Eagles. For the home team it was Danny O’Leary who led the scoring with a solid 6 singles sets. David Veale used all his experience to add two more, with Tim Bosley completing the singles with 1 set. There was little joy in the doubles against such strong opposition, with a single set gleaned. The final score for Eagles ended at 10 points.
Roy’s Boys were on form and both Barry and Roy Hooper scored maximums in the singles, with player of the match being awarded to Barry. Paul Sams added 7 singles sets before team combined to score a maximum in the doubles. With a final score of 34 it made the long trip for Roy’s Boys worthwhile.
Waterrow travelled to Minehead to complete their fixture against Drifters, which turned out to be a close-fought match. Eamon Farrelly was the star performer for Waterrow and his maximum earned him player of the match. Dennis Buckingham used all his experience to add 4 singles sets, with the final 2 being added by Russell Foote. The match hinged on the doubles and it was here that Waterrow clinched the victory with a maximum, and a grand total of 24 points.
In the singles, Drifters stayed in contention throughout. David Smith top-scored with 7 and Liz Fletcher added 6. Andrew Miles is still coming to terms with his new bat but prevailed in 3 singles sets. There was little joy in the doubles with only 1 set gleaned, giving Drifters a tally of 17 for the match.
Whilst at the Lawns, Waterrow were hosted by Hawks. Again, this was a close-fought affair. Hawks played consistently throughout but this week Mark Scyner never managed to produce his usual form, but led the team with 6 singles sets. Alfie and Nathaniel Southam played good supporting roles adding 5 and 4 singles sets respectively. There was little between the two teams in the doubles but Hawks just edged it with 7 sets, giving a final score of 22.
Waterrow showed their determination in the singles as both Eamon Farrelly and Ben Cooper scored maximums. Player of the match went again to Eamon. Russell Foote added the final singles set before the doubles battle commenced. With 6 doubles sets added, Waterrow ended the evening the victors with 25 points, but Hawks remain the high flyers at the top of the table..
