The battle for honours at the top of Division 2 of the Cleveland & District Summer Table Tennis League between Nunthorpe B, Beaumont Nomads B and Westbourne B intensified last week with all three teams enjoying big victories.
The most successful was Westbourne who picked up 18 points in total with a 10-0 victory over Ormesby C and 8-2 against Ormesby Wheelers. In the match against the Wheelers, Lee Kelly and Mike Purdy both scored hat tricks although Purdy had a very close match with Mark Bonnar winning 11-6 in the decider. For Ormesby Wheelers Noel Thomas and Brian Holloway, won one each at the expense of Roy Horsman.
Westbourne B’s second victory was more comfortable against Ormesby C by 10 - 0 with John Harper, Gary Pearson and Andy Greason all scoring hat tricks.
Beaumont Nomads B kept their strong interest in the Championship race alive with a 10-0 victory over Ormesby Wheelers, although the result could have been very different. Geoff Howe, Peter Ling and Bruce Lowther all scored hat tricks but two of Ling's matches went the distance when Ling beat Noel Thomas 11-9 in the decider and Brian Holloway 11-5 in the fifth. Holloway also took Lowther to five games.
Nunthorpe B who are top of the table continued their strong run with a 9-1 victory against Ormesby Hopes B with hat tricks from Barbara Kearney and David Hildreth. Jack Higgins won the one set for Ormesby Hopes B beating John Golding by three games to one.
With these results Nunthorpe B retain the top of the table with 111 points from 14 matches. Both Beaumont Nomads and Westbourne have a match in hand. Beaumont are 7 points behind with 104 whilst Westbourne are 10 points back on 101.
