With a hat trick from Michael Young, Ormesby A increased their lead at the top of the Division One of the Cleveland & District Summer Table Tennis League last week when they defeated the Hartlepool team Westbourne by 7 sets to 3.
Michael Young's hat trick required a five game win against Jimmy Scope. Young led by two sets to one when Scope won the fourth game at 11-7 to take it into the decider. Young was dominant in the last game winning by 11-4. Young was assisted by two wins each from Adam Ridley and Karl Shaw. Shaw went to five games in the two sets that he won beating Keith Robertson by 11-8 and Phil Webster 11-4. Ridley needed five games only once, defeating Webster 11-7. The key player for Westbourne was Jimmy Scope who won in straight games against Ridley and Shaw.
Ormesby main opponents for the title, Beaumont A, lost ground against Ormesby B despite two wins from Ian Plummer in a 5-5 draw. The star of the match was 14 year old Eve Witterick who scored a remarkable hat trick beating Stuart Park and Ian Plummer in straight games whilst defeating Steve Baines by three games to one. William Lim also did well for Ormesby B to win two of his three sets losing only to Plummer who won two sets for Beaumont.
These results give Ormesby A a 12 point lead at the top of the table with Beaumont in second place with 60 points but with a match in hand.
