Edmunds wins Vets and success for Father and Daughter in Div Two and Handicap Singles Tournament

The last events in the 2019 Eastern Valley Closed Tournament were completed recently with the finals of Division Two, Veterans and Semis and Final of Handicap singles.

Division Two:

The final was held between Wayne Ford of Cwmbran Fellows and Michal Policht of North Gwent Cougars. The final reflected their previous two encounters this season with the match going to a last game decider but it was Ford who prevailed this time to win 11-13, 11-8, 9-11, 13-11, 11-9.

Veterans:

The final was held between Mark Edmunds of Cwmbran Aztecs and David Lloyd of Cwmbran Blues. Despite beating the number one seed, Tony Collins, in the Semi-finals, Edmunds was still considered the underdog going into the final against second seed Lloyd. The match got off to a cagey start with both players taking their time to get into full swing with Lloyd taking an early 2 games to 1 lead. However, the last 2 games burst into life with some exhilarating table tennis and it was Edmunds who came back to win the match 12-10, 10-12, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8.

Handicap Singles:

 Semi-final Results:

Colin Price beat John Thomas (Scr) 11-7, 12-10, 11-6

Claire Flannagan beat John Williams (+4) 10-12, 11-9, 11-9, 11-9

This left the final between Claire Flannagan of YMCA Preachers and Colin Price of Cwmbran Blues. The handicap committee had decided to give Price a 2 point start for this match which unfortunately was not just enough to overcome Flannagan who won 11-9, 11-9, 11-9. This completed a successful night for the Ford family following Dad's success in the Division Two Final.
