SENIOR LEAGUE 2023-24 WEEK 11

Division 1

Whistlers A's lead at the top of Division 1 of the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues has reduced to 4 points heading into the new year, as they had no match this week and their closest rivals, Lions A won again.

The defending champions, Lions A, had a slow start to the season, however they appear to have started coming into form, following their 4th consecutive victory of the season this week. Their opponents this time out was 5th placed side Lions D and they emerged 7-3 victors, in a mirror result from the prior meeting in October. In that fixture Ryan Bichard was the player to prevent the whitewash courtesy of an unbeaten evening of singles action and he impressed once more this time out, with the same outcome. His toughest match was in the opener against Liam Robilliard and he needed to withstand a fightback from 2-0 down, before regaining composure and winning the deciding set 11-7. He followed this up with an impressive 4 set win over the in-form Joshua Butler, before rounding off his evening, and the match, with a straight sets win over Matthew Stubbington. Robilliard, Butler and Stubbington all picked up singles wins over Steve Ozanne and Sam Clark to make sure of the victory, however Ozanne led Robilliard 2-1, before losing in 5 sets. The doubles match was won by Butler and Stubbington over Bichard and Clark in 4 sets.

The only other top-flight match resulted in a heavy 9-1 win for 3rd placed side Lions C over a bottom placed Lions E side missing captain Paul Hainsworth. Phil Ogier and Jez Powell were comfortable winners over Andy Gill, Connor Powell and reserve Ian Le Page in singles action, whilst Charlotte Casey played well during a 4-set win over Le Page and a straight sets win over Connor. She wasn't able to complete the hattrick of wins as she went down in 4 closely contested sets to former team-mate Gill, which prevented the whitewash. The doubles was won in 4 sets by Jez and Casey over Gill and Le Page.

Division 2

Whistlers E hold a strong 5-point lead at the top, however their closest rivals do have a game in hand. It took 13 matches, but they finally surrendered their 100% winning record for the season as 5th placed side Lions G spoiled the party, with an excellent performance, leaving the match tied as a 5-5 stalemate. Jonah Ingrouille had one of his strongest nights of the season as he earned strong 4 set wins over both Tim Le Page and Oskar Cleal. Andy Ferbrache added straight sets win over Tim Le Page, whilst Brian Ferbrache ousted youngster Cleal in 5 sets. The doubles proved decisive, and it saw brothers Andy and Brian combine to good effect. They battled back from 2-1 down to overcome Dunning and Cleal in 5 sets, the final sets both won by the narrow 11-9 margin. For the league leaders, averages leader Dunning was unbeaten in singles action, winning all of his matches in straight sets. Le Page beat Brian in 4 sets, whilst Cleal did very well to battle back from 2-1 down to overcome Andy in 5 sets.

Division 3

The tightest Division of all remains that way as Lions J continue to lead the way by a single point. This week they were comfortable 9-1 winners over St Pauls B. The team of Aiden Ozanne, Luke Evans and Andy Ozanne were successful in singles action against Rob Vile, John Wills and Brian Le Cras, with the exception of Vile's 4 set win over Andy in the penultimate match of the night, which prevented the whitewash. The doubles was won by the youthful duo of Aiden and Evans over Vile and Wills in 4 sets.

Division 4

League leaders Lions O are now the sole side across all Divisions with a 100% winning record and they did not play this week.

This enabled the lead to be reduced from 5 points to 3 by Ravenscroft Panthers F thanks to their 3rd consecutive 10-0 whitewash of the season, Bribar B the side on the receiving end. Jamie Regan, Micah Cohen and Xavier Ingrouille won all singles matches over Emily Gavey, Olivia Gilbert and Connor Osbourne, whilst Regan and Ingrouille combined to beat Gavey and Gilbert in straight sets in the doubles rubber.

There is little rest for the players as action kicks off on 3 January 2024, with action from Divisions 1 and 3, with action resuming in Divisions 2 and 4 the evening after.
