SENIOR LEAGUE 2023-24 WEEK 2

After just 2 weeks of action, there are only 3 sides yet to taste defeat in the top flight of the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues.

Division 1

Lions D are the unlikely early leaders of the Division by virtue of having a stronger games difference of 1 single match than Whistlers A.

They followed up on their strong start to the season by earning themselves a solid 7-3 win over Whistlers B. The structure of the win was identical to their opening fixture as it saw each of Ryan Bichard, Steve Ozanne and Sam Clark come through victorious in 2 of their 3 singles clashes. They all earned wins over Mark Pipet and Shelby Timms to secure the win. The doubles rubber was a close encounter but Bichard and Ozanne turned it around against Lawrence Stacey and Pipet and won in 5 sets, having trailed 2-0. Stacey himself had a strong evening in singles action and went unbeaten. He defeated Ozanne in 5 sets, Bichard in 4 sets and Clark in straight sets.

Whistlers A came through a tight tussle with Lions C and edged it 6-4, despite an unbeaten evening of singles action for Phil Ogier. Ogier was in fine form during wins over Joshua Stacey, Matthew Casey and Joseph Bourgaize for the loss of just a single end to Stacey in the process. Jez Powell added a straight sets win over Bourgaize, but the Lions side could not find any further wins. The doubles rubber was a crucial one and despite a fightback from 2-0 by Ogier and Powell against Stacey and Casey, the Whistlers duo regrouped and took the deciding end 11-6. Stacey and Casey earned singles wins over Powell and Charlotte Casey, whilst Bourgaize also played his part with an important straight sets win over Casey.

Defending champions Lions A got their campaign up and running with a victory this week, despite having 2 reserves. They squeezed past a Lions E side, containing a reserve of their own, 6-4. Liam Robilliard and reserve Ellis Tomlin each defeated Connor Powell and his brother, 2nd Division reserve Cameron Powell in singles action and also combined strongly to defeat Paul Hainsworth and Connor in straight sets in the doubles rubber. Their other reserve Ian Le Page crucially came through in the battle of the reserves when he beat Cameron in 4 sets. For the beaten side, Hainsworth won all of his singles matches in straight sets, whilst Connor earned a lengthy 5 set win over Le Page.

Division 2

Just like the top flight, there are only 3 sides in the Division that hold an unbeaten record and amazingly there is yet to be a drawn match across the opening 4 weeks of matches.

St Pauls A, Whistlers D and Whistlers E are the sides holding the perfect records with the former 2 having played 3 fixtures and the latter having played 2.

It is the St Pauls outfit officially top as they have a strong games ratio than the Whistlers D side. Both leading sides were however on the sidelines this week due to having a ghost week, or the luxury of being able to re-arrange their match due to participation of players in the Veterans 6 Nations competition taking place in Dublin this weekend. It was also the same story for the Whistlers E side.

This enabled some other sides to close the gap and the main benefactors were Lions F who won their second consecutive match, a 7-3 win over Ravenscroft Panthers B. Caden Brouard was unbeaten for his victorious side as he overcame Juliette Yeaman in straight sets, Marli Barker in 4 sets and 3rd Division reserve Barnaby Groves in 5 sets. Tomlin added wins over Barker and Yeaman in 4 sets, whilst James Crocker beat Groves in 5 sets and Yeaman in straight sets. For the beaten Panthers side, Groves managed to win 1 of his 3 x 5 set matches of the night with an excellent victory over Tomlin, from a 2-0 deficit. Barker prevented an unbeaten evening of singles action for Crocker in the final match of the night as she too came back from 2-0 down. The final win for the Panthers side came in the doubles as Barker and Yeaman impressively defeated Brouard and Tomlin in straight sets.

In the other Division 2 fixture, Lions G earned an impressive 6-4 win over Whistlers C. Andy Ferbrache starred with an unbeaten evening. He defeated Martin Sarre in straight sets, Paula Le Ber in 5 sets and reserve Henri Whitehorne in straight sets. He also teamed with Joe Ingrouille in the important doubles match where they edged past Sarre and Le Ber in 5 sets. It was however young Division 3 reserve Aiden Ozanne that stole the show with an excellent evening of performances. He upset Sarre with a noteworthy straight sets win in addition to beating Whitehorne in straight sets. He also gave a strong account for himself against Le Ber, but went down in 4 sets. All of the Whistlers players earned singles wins over Ingrouille to reduce the margin of defeat.

Division 3

Ravenscroft Panthers C and Lions J remain joint top as each has won all 4 of their matches so far this season.

The Panthers side have a stronger games difference and have been utterly dominant so far. This was clear to see this week as they earned their second consecutive 10-0 whitewash of the season, Lions L the side at the sharp end. Groves, Shaun Mosely and Steve Martin all defeated Graham Mallett, Helen Barker and reserve Ella Le Ber in singles action, whilst Groves and Mosley won the doubles match against Mallett and Barker in straight sets.

Lions J on the other hand a tougher test against Lions K, but came through as comfortable 7-3 winners in the end. Aiden Ozanne was the best performer as he beat Alex Hutchinson, Lynn Finn and reserve Henri Whitehorne. Father Andy added wins over Hutchinson and Finn, but was edged out in 5 sets by Whitehorne. Luke Evans concluded the win by defeating Finn in straight sets and he also teamed with Aiden to win the doubles against Hutchinson and Whitehorne in straight sets.

Division 4

Like the 3rd Division, there are 2 teams at the top with 100% winning records so far this season and this is Lions O and Ravenscroft Panthers F.

The Lions side have won all 4 of their matches and this resulted in a strong 8-2 win over Bribar B this week. Frank Coppolo and reserve Alexis Aquino won all of their singles matches over Emily Gavey, Olivia Guilbert and Leonardo Guariento to make sure of the win, whilst Katey Collenette added a further straight sets win over Guilbert. The doubles was won by Coppolo and Collenette over Gavey and Guariento in straight sets. The whitewash was prevented due to the wins by Gavey and Guariento over Collenette in 4 and 5 sets respectively.

The Panthers side have won all 3 of their matches this season and won 9-1 over Bribar C this week. Micah Cohen and Jamie Regan each went unbeaten on the night due to their wins over Keira Eldridge, Ella Le Ber and Isla Bretel. The duo also combined well to defeat Eldridge and Le Ber in straight sets in the doubles match. The whitewash was prevented by Le Ber's close 4 set win over Xavier Ingrouille, who won his other singles matches on the night in straight sets.
