Whistlers A maintained their grip on the top-flight of the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues heading into the half term break and now hold a 3 point lead at the top.

Division 1

Whistlers A may have lost their 100% winning start to the season last time out, but they were back to their ruthless best and earned an astonishing 9-1 win over the bottom placed side Whistlers B this week. The fixture was unique in that it saw the B side's leading player Lawrence Stacey lose all of his matches in what must be the first time in numerous years, due to him being a leading Island player. Matthew Casey set the wheels in motion when he came back from 2-1 down to win 11-9 in the 5th and deciding set before Joseph Bourgaize impressed with a dominant straight sets win. Twin Joshua then overcame dropping the opening set to win in 4. Joshua and Bourgaize also picked up wins over Mark Pipet and Shelby Timms in singles action, whilst Casey also beat Timms comfortably in straight sets. The doubles was edged by Casey and Bourgaize over Pipet and Timms in 5 sets, despite them trailing 2-1. The fixture looked very much to be heading to a whitewash however Pipet battled hard in the final match of the night against Casey to save some pride for his side. He fought back from the brink at 2-1 down and edged the final 2 sets 12-10, 11-8.

Defending champions Lions A were beaten for the first time this season and rued the absence of Joshua Butler during their 7-3 loss to Lions B. Ben Foss and Jamie Ferbrache both played leading roles in this match, with each ending the evening unbeaten in singles action. They each defeated Liam Robilliard, Matthew Stubbington and 2nd Division reserve Ian Le Page. The other victory on the night came from Nye Matthew, who beat Le Page in straight sets. Stubbington and Robilliard each defeated Matthew on the night in singles action, however Stubbington did this the hard way and needed to overcome a slow start to overturn a 2-0 deficit and win over the full 5 set distance. The duo also combined strongly to win the doubles match over Foss and Ferbrache in straight sets.

Lions D moved up into 2nd spot courtesy of a strong 7-3 win over a Lions E side containing 2 reserves. Ryan Bichard has enjoyed a fine start to the season and he defeated Connor Powell and reserves Dan Collenette and Ellis Tomlin in singles action. His toughest test came against Collenette in the final match of the night where he had to withstand a comeback from 2-0 down from his opponent before he comfortably won the deciding end 11-5. For the beaten Lions E side, Collenette defeated Clark in 5 sets and Ozanne in 4 sets, whilst Tomlin defeated Clark in 5 sets.

Division 2

There is now just 1 side remaining in the Division with a 100% winning record. This was due to the narrow 6-4 defeat inflicted on Whistlers D by 2nd placed side Whistlers C this week. Martin Sarre and Paula Le Ber did the brunt of the damage for the victors as they directly contributed to 5 of the 6 rubbers. Both individuals earned singles wins over Keith Opie and Jayden Tucknott, however Sarre needed the full 5 sets to battle past Tucknott. The other 2 wins for the C side saw important contributions from Stuart Sarre, He firstly beat Opie in 4 sets before teaming with uncle Martin to battle back from 2-0 down to earn a decisive 5 set doubles win against the strong and highly experienced combination of Kay Chivers and Opie, 12-10 the score in the final set. For the beaten Whistlers side, Chivers maintained her 100% singles record, but only just. She needed to do it the hard way against Martin as she was 2-1 behind before storming through to win in 5. Tucknott picked up the other win when he overcame Stuart in 4 sets.

Whistlers E maintained their 100% winning start, but narrowly as they fell on the right side of a 6-4 result during their clash with 8th placed side Ravenscroft Panthers A. Craig Dunning steered the way strongly for his side. The player with a 100% winning singles record defeated Brandon Ferbrache, Peter Vivian and 3rd Division reserve Barnaby Groves for the loss of just a single end to Ferbrache in the process. Oskar Cleal beat Ferbrache in 4 sets and Vivian in straight sets before teaming with Dunning to win the all-important doubles match against Ferbrache and Vivian in 4 sets. For the Panthers side youngster Groves impressed once more with an upset 5 set win over Cleal from 2-0 down as well as a straight sets win over reserve Shane Cotter. Vivian edged Cotter in 5 sets from 2-0 down, whilst Ferbrache beat the same player in straight sets in the final match of the night.

Division 3

7 fixtures in and there still remains nothing to separate Ravenscroft Panthers C and Lions J except a very small games difference of just 3 individual matches of the 70 contested so far this season. Both has won all 7 of their matches and the cumulative individual matches lost by either side across the 140 played is incredibly just 15.

The Panthers side has the better record, as they have lost just 6. This did include a loss of 1 individual match this week as they defeated Lions I 9-1. Barnaby Groves and Shaun Mosley were unbeaten as each beat Jenny Powell, Ollie Sparks and reserve Rachael Sharp in singles matches. The duo also teamed to win the doubles against Powell and Sparks in straight sets. Steve Martin beat Sharp in straight sets and Sparks in 4 sets, but he was defeated in his opening match with Powell in straight sets.

The Lions J side closed in the games difference ratio this week as they were 10-0 winners over Ravenscroft Panthers D. Aiden Ozanne, Andy Ozanne and Luke Evans all defeated Huxley Le Conte, Richard Wellfair and reserve Xavier Ingrouille in singles action. Ingrouille came the closest to preventing the whitewash in his match against Andy where he was edged 15-13 in the deciding set. The junior duo of Aiden and Evans won the doubles over Le Conte and Wellfair in straight sets.

Division 4

Much like the 3rd Division, there are 2 leading sides with 100% winning records with each only separated by the very slightest of margins. In this case the margin is just 1 single match, which is in favour of the Lions O side, with the Ravenscroft Panthers F side hot on their heels.

The Lions side had their closest match of the season as they were extended to 7-3 by Lions N. Lionel Jones and reserve Jan Priest were unbeaten on the night to ensure the win was obtained by the league leaders, however they each needed the full 5 sets to get past Val Guilbert. Their other wins over Roland Tracuums and Diane Le Page were more comfortable. Katy Collenette was unable to add a singles win on the night, but was narrowly edged by Le Page in 5 sets despite having led 2-0. She did however add a valuable contribution in the doubles rubber where alongside Jones they earned a tight 4 set doubles win over Guilbert and Le Page.

The Panthers side closed the gap on the games ratio following their emphatic 9-1 win over Whistlers H. The team of Xavier Ingrouille, Micah Cohen and Jamie Regan were decisive in their matches against Sian Craig, Sandra Sebire and Ruth Vaudin, with Craig being the player to prevent the whitewash when she came back from 2-0 down to overcome Regan. Ingrouille and Regan won the doubles match against Vaudin and Sebire in 4 sets.
