17th January 2017 Match Reports

In Division One of the Eastern Valley Table Tennis League YMCA Preachers extended their lead at the top with a convincing win against Blaenavon Aces 27-4. There were maximum wins for David Lloyd, Claire Flannagan and Eric Turner, but it was Lloyd who was the player of the match.

Cwmbran Blues continued to keep up the pressure on the leaders with a 22-10 win over Cwmbran Colts. For the Blues there were 3 wins each for Bhargav Uday Chandra and Mark Farrow but it was Chandra who picked up the player of the match award. For the Colts there were notable wins for the Pearce brothers Matthew and Ben over the experienced Roger Grech.

The final match in Division One was the match of the night when Cwmbran Aztecs edged out Bristol Nomads 18-17. Despite being on the losing side the Nomads Alex Banks won all his matches to pick up the player of the match award. Making his debut for the Nomads was Alex Banks brother Andy who has been out of the game for a few years. For the Aztecs Tony Collins and Glyn Kellow, returning to Eastern Valley after a couple of years absence, both won two matches.

Next week sees the previously postponed match being played between the Blues and Preachers which could go a long way to deciding the outcome of the Division One title.

In Division Two Cwmbran Panthers continue to hold a big lead over their rivals with 3 matches to play. In their latest match they overcame Cwmbran Fellows 25-10. The Panthers Mike Blatchford picked up the player of the match award with his maximum wins including a very tight win over Wayne Ford after being 2 sets down. Supporting Blatchford very well was Howard Gaut and Yuri Cherkasenko whose only defeats were in 5 sets to Ford.

Cwmbran Dynamos continue to provide the only opposition to the Panthers with an emphatic 27-4 win over Cwmbran Eccentrics. Player of the match was Alex Jones who was well backed by Richard Lownsbrough and Will Smith-Haddon, all with maximum wins.

The final match in Division Two saw Cwmbran Devils beat North Gwent Cougars 23-9. Both Colin Scott and Stan Williams picked up 3 wins each for the Devils, but it was Scott who just edged the player of the match award. For the Cougars Iestyn Howells battled well for his 5 points.
