30th January 2018 Match Reports

This week Cwmbran Colts suffered a setback in their march to the Eastern Valley League Division One title when they lost 15-18 to YMCA Preachers. The Colts could not overcome the absence of their number one player, Lee Thomas, particularly when the Preachers could call upon their super sub Neil Wright. It was Wright who picked up the player of the match award with his 3 wins. For the Colts Lyndon Jones and Mathew Pearce battled hard for their 2 wins each.

The Colts' defeat provided an opportunity for Cwmbran Aztecs to close the gap on the leaders in their match against Bristol Nomads.  Going into the match the Aztecs could not have felt confident as they were missing their number one player, Tony Collins, and had Andrew Ryder returning after a seven week injury absence. However, the Colts won 25-11 with Ryder picking up the player of the match award with his 3 wins and was well supported by Mark Edmunds and substitute Colin Price with their 2 wins and 8 points each. For the Nomads Keith Armstrong battled well for his 2 wins including a good win over the higher ranked Edmunds.

The final match in Division One saw Cwmbran Blues defeat Blaenavon Aces 22-15. Player of the match was the Blues' David D Lloyd with his 3 wins and he was well supported by Roger Grech with his 2 wins. For the Aces Ben Allen fought well for his 2 wins.

In Division Two, Cwmbran Dynamos took advantage of their game in hand to overtake the leaders, Cwmbran Panthers, following their 23-9 win over Chepstow Chiefs. Once again the Dynamos' Alex jones was the player of the match with his 3 wins. Jones was well supported by Will Smith-Haddon and substitute Yuri Cherkasenko with their 2 wins each. For the Chiefs, Elliott Kempson and Finley McNeil battled hard for their 1 win each, both against higher ranked players.

Hanging onto third place are North Gwent Cougars following their 20-12 win over Cwmbran Eccentrics. The Cougars' Greg Price continues to beat all that's put before him and once again picked up the player of the match award with his 3 wins. Price was well supported by Sam Slatter with his 2 wins and Garin Edwards with his 5 points including a narrow 5 set defeat to the highly ranked John Thomas. For the Eccentrics Thomas picked up 2 wins.

The battle for 4th place seems to be between Cwmbran Devils and Cwmbran Fellows and it was the Fellows who won 18-15 to close the gap on their rivals to 1 point. However, it was perhaps a fortunate result as the Devils' Stan Williams had to withdraw due to injury half way through his first match.  Player of the match was the Devils' Roshan Rai who comfortable won his 3 matches including a good win over the higher ranked Wayne Ford.
