McBeath comes through decider in Belgium

David McBeath survived a scare to come through his first match in a decider, while Tom Jarvis and Andrew Baggaley were also winners on day one of the Belgium Open.

McBeath was up against India’s Arjun Ghosh and, after a match in which he twice trailed and then led 3-2, finally prevailed 11-7 in the seventh against an opponent ranked No 583.

It was far easier for Baggaley, who beat Canada’s Marko Medjugorac in four straight, and Jarvis, who also only need the minimum number of games against Colombia’s Camilo Giraldo, who is ranked outside the world’s top 1,000.

All three are in action later today in the third preliminary round. Sam Walker is seeded into the main draw as 15th seed.

In the women’s singles, Maria Tsaptsinos lost in six to India’s Sutirtha Mukherjee, ranked 543, while world No 309 Zhu Chengzhu of Hong Kong was too good for Emily Bolton in four. Tin-Tin Ho is seeded into the main draw.

In the under-21s, Bolton went out to Ozge Yilmaz of Turkey (WR 177) in the first preliminary round and Ho exited in the second to Kuo Chia-Yun of Chinese Taipei, but Tsaptsinos came through her match against Poland’s Julia Slazak to go into the last 32 – her tie against Shin Yubin of South Korea is tomorrow.
