2019-20 Week 2 Round Up By David Sillifant
North Cornwall Table Tennis League 2019/20 round-up (Week two)
DIVISION One champions Torridge laid a big marker down to the rest of their title challengers by beating Budehaven A 7-3.
Both sides have aspirations of winning the title, but the home side proved too strong, although Budehaven will feel they missed out on a couple of points, even if Keith Bradshaw finally ended David Streak’s unbeaten record in North Cornwall.
Streak had won his previous 61 matches since moving to the area, but Bradshaw, who plays when he is down on holiday, beat him in four sets.
However the home side’s best player was Steve Cragg, who won all three. He first surprised Bradshaw before fighting back from two games down to defeat Mark Beaumont 3-2. He then overcame a spirited Dave Salisbury in a decider, after the Bude captain rallied from 2-0 down.
Streak easily defeated Beaumont and Salisbury, who only won one match between them.
Torridge’s other points came from Peter Freeburn, who got the better of Salisbury, and in the doubles.
With North Hill A and Helland’s clash rearranged and Budehaven C having a bye, the other two fixtures in the division saw a Budehaven derby between the B and D team and Crackington A welcome Whitstone Wanderers.
At Crackington, the hosts edged a close encounter 6-4, which saw the impressive Frank Barnes drop just one end on his way to three victories.
On a night where all six players involved won a match, Crackington’s Ross Paynter and Ross Wilmshurst each claimed a point as well as in the doubles.
Barry Stearman picked up a brace as he was victorious in two five setters while Nathan Jukes beat Paynter and Doug Genini edged out Wilmshurst, the last end being 12-10 in Genini’s favour.
Budehaven B ended up beating their D team 9-1, although it could easily have been a draw.
Although Ashley Taylor eased to three victories without dropping an end, David Sillifant and David Ewen both needed deciders to get past Gary Bickle and skipper Anthony Ward.
Ewen twice recovered from 2-1 down, including a brilliant match with Bickle to conclude the evening, showing superb courage to withstand Bickle’s assault, while Sillifant edged home 12-10 in the fifth against his opposite number.
The home side did get on the scoreboard in the doubles as Bickle and Ward won 3-0 against Taylor and Ewen.
Altarnun A continue to set the pace at the top of Division Two after a 6-4 victory at Budehaven E.
Paul Burden eased to three wins for the visitors and was well supported by Alex Whitfield, who nabbed a brace. They also fought back from a game down to win the doubles against Ian Westaway and Roy Stubbs.
Westaway was Bude’s best player, defeating Geoff Hale and Whitfield in straight games, while Stubbs and Ezra Jukes each beat Hale.
Crackington B are level on points with Altarnun after a 7-3 victory over their C team at Crackington Institute.
Keiron Chatterjea made it six wins from six to start the season, although he was pushed all the by way Simon Patterson, sneaking home 12-10 in the fifth game.
Judith Cook continued her good form with a treble, while reserve Paul Seez also contributed.
Crackington C’s points came from Patterson, Robin Evans, who just edged out Seez, and in the doubles.

Alan Quilter kept up his 100% winning start to the campaign for the hosts while Jay Brewer defeated Lois Atkin and debutant Julian Lavery for a rare brace. They also eased to success in the doubles.
Launceston, who were without skipper Stephen Parsons, saw Hughes win two, while Atkin and Lavery were too good for Shaun Collins.
In Division Three, it was a good start for Budehaven F and G as they both beat teams from Bridgerule.
The F team of Ezra Jukes and Phil Hawken won 5-0 against league debutants Bridgerule C while the G team, edged out their Bridgerule B counterparts 3-2. Saf Wallace won twice for the hosts before joining forces with David Scott to defeat Marcus Dymond and Ray Bewes in the deciding doubles.
