Warwickshire's opening match was a keenly fought local derby match last month against Worcestershire at Colebridge in which they built up a 4-1 lead only to see the visitors stage a terrific comeback to win the match 6-4.
Phil Paine, Pat Glynn and John Taylor all won a singles and Dot Macfarlane teamed up with Glynn to win what looked to be a vital 5 game Mixed Doubles to give Warwickshire the advantage but man of the match Pat McCabe responded superbly with two fine singles successes and partnered Chris Maiden to a dramatic 5th game Mens Doubles win which proved to be the turning point of the match. Martin Clarke and Margaret Dignum won the decisive second Mixed Doubles for Worcestershire in the last individual match which was another 5 game thriller against JohnTaylor and Dot Macfarlane.
Last Weekend saw a further 4 matches played at Draycott with Warwickshire winning one, drawing one, and losing two.
Warwickshire's victory saw them overcome botton side Cambridgeshire 9-1 with Paine, Glynn and Taylor unbeaten both in singles and doubles, whilst Marion Dixon(deputising for Dot Macfarlane) showed excellent consistency in both mixed doubles before losing in 4 games to Cambridge's Diane Gutteridge.
The two defeats came against the top two sides Yorkshire 2 and Linconshire but both matches were much closer than the respective 1-9 and 2-8 losing scorelines suggest. The Lincolnshire match was notable for an outstanding victory for Marion Dixon in the Ladies Singles over highly ranked Marilyn Bawden in a nerve jangling 5 game thriller.
In their final match of the weekend, Warwickshire let slip another commanding position when leading 5-2, only to see Cheshire 2 win the last three games, two of which were 14-12 and 11-9 deciding game thrillers, to seal a deserved 5-5 draw. Pat Glynn won both his singles in this match and partnered Phil Paine and Marion Dixon to key victories in the Mens Doubles and the first Mixed Doubles, Phil Paine added a further singles success to complete Warwickshire's tally.
One match remains to be played, which will take place at Colebridge on Saturday 1st March, when Warwickshire entertain Nottinghamshire.
