Warwickshire have entered two Over 60's teams in the County Championships for the first time with both the 1st and 2nd teams being placed in Division 1A, and the last few weeks has proved a busy period for both teams.
Warwickshire 1 have won two of their opening six matches, beating Warwickshire 2 7-3 in a highly competitive local derby and they also eclipsed a dogged Cambridgeshire 7-3.
Pat Glynn won both his singles and teamed up with Phil Paine for a successful doubles against Warwickshire 2 whilst Paine and Steve Taylor added a single apiece and Dot Macfarlane staved off a big challenge from Coventry's Linda Clempson 12-10 in the deciding game whilst also adding a mixed doubles success with Glynn. Paul Calloway and John Taylor each won a singles for Warwickshire 2 whose tally was completed with Taylor adding a successful mixed doubles with Linda Clempson.
Against Cambridgeshire, Glynn and Paine each won 2 singles and again teamed up for a doubles victory whilst Steve Taylor added a further singles and partnered Dot Macfarlane to victory in the second mixed doubles.
Warks 1's fixture against Worcestershire is always one of the most keenly contested fixtures of the campaign and this time proved no exception with Worcestershire squeezing home 6-4 after crucially winning all three deciding set matches. Glynn again won both his singles at the expense of Pat McCabe and Ken Walton and also partnered Paine to a convincing doubles verdict, whist Paine overcame Walton for the side's other success. Chris Maiden gained two vital wins for Worcestershire whilst Margaret Dignum was unbeaten in singles and both mixed doubles.
Another narrow 4-6 loss for Warwickshire 1 followed at the hands of Nottinghamshire despite excellent victories for Paine and Steve Taylor over Nottingham No 1 Alan Philpott, Taylor went on to complete a deserved brace when overcoming Mick Petska, and Paine partnered Dot Macfarlane to a useful mixed doubles win after the pair lost the first two games. Debutant Terry Cooper was extremely unlucky not to register a win for Warwickshire losing 9-11 in the fifth game to Petska and 10-12 in the fifth game in the second mixed doubles to a net edge loop from Philpott.
The other matches also ended in defeat for Warwickshire 1, losing 2-8 to a tough Yorkshire 2 team (Paine and Steve Taylor each winning a singles), and 1-9 to title contenders Cheshire 2 (Pat Glynn winning the only singles).
Warwickshire 2 have lost all five of their opening matches, but John Ludford gained two fine singles successes against Cheshire 3, and their 1-9 defeat at the hands of Worcestershire contained many closely fought games, with Pete Dunnett scoring the only success in the opening game of the match with a 11-9 deciding game win against Pat McCabe.
The final round of matches for both Warwickshire sides will be in Halifax on 12th March 2016
