WARWICKSHIRE OVER  60’S REPORT

Warwickshire Over 60’s 1st team have made an excellent start to their campaign in County Championships Over 60’s Division 1A with 8-2 victories against Warwickshire 2 and a more than useful Cheshire 3, followed by a nail biting 6-4 success over close rivals Worcestershire.

The match against Worcestershire, which was played at Middle Littleton Village Hall near Evesham, was closely fought throughout, with the outcome being in doubt until the very last game when Pat Glynn and Diane St. Ledger recovered from trailing 2 sets to 1 against Pat McCabe and Margaret Dignum in the second Mixed Doubles to win the final two sets 11-8 11-8 to secure victory for Warwickshire in a tense finale. This capped a decisive unbeaten performance from St. Ledger, who had earlier beaten Dignum 15-13 11-9 11-9 in the Ladies Singles, and partnered Steve Taylor to win the first Mixed Doubles in four sets. Mens no.1 Pat Glynn also played a vital role in Warwickshire’s success with two fine four set singles triumphs over Ken Walton and Pat McCabe, whilst Phil Paine also overcame Walton in four sets in the opening game of the match to give Warwickshire early momentum. Chris Maiden impressed for Worcestershire, scoring convincing wins over Paine and Steve Taylor, and also combined with Walton for a five set doubles verdict over Glynn and Paine after saving a match point at the end of the fourth set. McCabe completed Worcester’s tally to haul them back into contention at 4-4 when overcoming Taylor in a five set thriller after Taylor had staged a fine recovery from 2 sets to 0 behind, and also 4-10 down in the fourth set.

Glynn, Taylor and St. Ledger all turned in fine unbeaten performances in singles and doubles in the victory against Cheshire 3 in a match a lot closer than the 8-2 margin suggests.

Warwickshire 2 have lost all three of their opening matches 2-8, but have fought well with no.1 Paul Calloway in particularly good form when gaining an impressive singles success in each match against Warwickshire 1, Worcestershire, and Yorkshire 2, and also partnering John Ludford to a notable doubles victory against Ken Walton and Chris Maiden in the Worcestershire match. John Taylor also enjoyed a useful singles win against both Warwickshire 1 and Yorkshire 2.
