Part 1 Juniors and Veterans
The Junior and Veterans events in the Warwickshire Closed tournament were held at St Nicholas Leisure Centre Warwick on Sunday. There were shocks in both the Junior Boys and Girls events with the number 2 seeds defeating the number ones. Timmy Cooper reached the Final of the Boys after a semi-final win over Free Church club-mate Adam Cofler and another all Free Church affair saw Lee Dorning defeat Sam Weaving in 4. However, the Final was surprisingly one sided as Dorning accounted for Cooper in three straight games. Church’s Olivia Fletcher won her group against club-mates Eve Briscoe and Ciara Hancox in the Junior girls before receiving a bye to the Final. Colebridge’s Lisa Rinnhofer, ranked 43 in England, also won her group before seeing off Rugby’s Milly Bradshaw in her semi. The Final went to 5 with Fletcher beating her County number one -9, 3, -10, 4, 8.
The Junior Boys doubles went to plan as number one seeds Cooper and Dorning proved too experienced for the young pairing of Rugby’s Sam Cafearo and Church’s Jack Green. However, the Junior Girls doubles threw up two big surprises. Number one seeds Olivia Fletcher and Milly Bradshaw fell in the semi to the church pairing of Eve Briscoe and Katie Singleton and number two seeds, Lisa Rinnhofer and Emma Kilpatrick (FC) fell to Sophie Rinnhofer, Lisa’s younger sister, (Colebridge) and Milly Green (FC). In an exciting final which went to 5, Briscoe and Singleton sealed the title.
Sam Cafearo duly won the Under 15 boys from Rugby club-mate Callum Ball who beat number two seed Jack Green in the semi. Church’s Ciara Hancox claimed the Under 15 Girls title against team- mate Emily Beasley who was thrilled to get her first ever win against Sophie Rinnhofer earlier. Rinnhofer did not go home without a title however as she romped to success in the Under 13 Girls, overcoming the much improved Milly Green. Free Church called the shots in the Under 13 boys. Nikit Sajiv beat Rugby’s William Chen in his semi whilst Ricardo Bolanos (FC) faced his young brother Eduardo in his semi, Bolanos junior having excelled to win his 3 player group. Sajiv lost the first against the elder Bolanos in the Final but bounced back to claim the next three.
The Under 11 Boys went to Rugby’s Kian Todd who defeated Eddy Bolanos in 4 and the Under 11 Girls saw Eleanor Fletcher claim a second family County title against Erin Darwen, both of Free Church.
The over 40’s Singles was won by St Georges’ Mark Jackson who beat Andrew Frain (Smiths Wood, Birmingham) in the semi before facing another Smiths Wood member in Pat Glynn who had enjoyed a tremendous win against County Council’s Simon Griew in the semi. Jackson then paired with Church’s Michael Ho to take the over 40’s doubles against Frain and Glynn. The over 50’s singles was won by Frain who beat Glynn and the over 70’s went to St Georges’ Bill Fletcher who beat Streetley’s Terry Cooper.
The other two events were the Junior Boys’ restricted singles won by Jack Green against Tom Fletcher (FC) and the Girls restricted singles in which Milly Bradshaw overcame Emma Kilpatrick.
The senior events take place next Sunday, again at St Nicholas.
Part 2 Senior Events (plus the Over 60's Final)
The second day of the County table-tennis championships took place on Sunday at St Nicholas Leisure centre in Warwick featuring the Senior events. In the Men’s singles both the top two seeds fell in the quarter-finals with Rugby’s number one, Ryan Stockham, falling to number 5 seed Pat Glynn of Smith’s Wood, Birmingham. Number two seed Ryan Lines, also of Rugby, fell to Free Church Junior Timmy Cooper the number 6 seed. With Glynn then falling to his veteran club-mate Andrew Frain and Cooper falling to his club-mate Lee Dorning both in 5, two unseeded players contested the Final. Frain defeated the current County Junior champion 12-10,11-8,6-11,11-5 to claim the title.
The Ladies Singles threw up a shock in the groups where Free Church junior Jenny Singleton knocked out number 4 seed Milly Bradshaw of Rugby. However, Singleton went out to the hot favourite Kate Hughes of Colebridge in the semis. The other semi-final was a repeat of last week’s junior girls’ final with Free Church’s Olivia Fletcher again getting the better of Colebridge’s Lisa Rinnhofer. However, Hughes emphasised the gap between her and the County’s nonetheless talented youngsters by overwhelmimg Fletcher 3, 2 and 3.
The Men’s doubles title went to Rugby in the shape of Ryan Lines and Ryan Stockham who defeated County Council’s Simon Griew and his partner Mark Jackson of St Georges 6,8 and 7. The Ladies doubles also went to form with Hughes pairing with Rinnhofer to defeat Bradshaw and Fletcher 5,3,-9,6. Hughes made it a trio of titles to take the Mixed doubles with Stockham in straight games against Bradshaw and Lines.
It was an all Free Church affair in the restricted Men’s singles where Dorning grabbed his third title of the championships against his coach Chris Mulligan 7,8,-8,5. Rugby’s Jo Outhwaite took the restricted Ladies singles beating Emma Kilpatrick of Free Church 11-7 in the 5th.
In the Over 60's held over from the first weekend Pat Glynn the number 1 seed took the title beating unseeded Pete Dunnett
