Warwickshire's two Over 60's teams both performed creditably on the final day of County Championships Division 1A fixtures held at Halifax on 12th March.
Warwickshire 1 finished in mid table after securing a 7-3 victory over Cheshire 3 in their final match, with Pat Glynn and Steve Taylor each winning two singles, whilst Phil Paine added a further singles before partnering Glynn to win the Mens Doubles. Linda Clempson also partnered Glynn to a key success in the first Mixed Doubles.
This followed a narrow 4-6 defeat for Warwickshire 1 at the hands of champions Lincolnshire, with Glynn gaining victory in both of his singles, including a fine win over no.1 Brian Hill in four sets. Paine and Steve Taylor contributed a singles apiece to keep Warwickshire well in contention, but two five sets reversals in both the Mens Doubles and first Mixed Doubles prevented an even better result.
Glynn and Paine led 9-7 in the deciding set in the Mens Doubles but lost the last four points in a real cliffhanger, whilst Glynn and Linda Clempson led 2-0 in sets in their Mixed Doubles before an astute tactical change from Hill and Marilyn Bawden resulted in Lincolnshire staging a good comeback to claim the last three sets.
Warwickshire 2 ended in the bottom two in the same division, but finished well in achieving a 5-5 draw against fellow strugglers Cambridgeshire in their final match, despite having to concede three games due to having no lady player.
Paul Calloway and John Ludford both played well to win two singles each for Warwickshire, whilst Malcolm Macfarlane scored a further singles success to gain a share of the spoils.
Earlier in the day, Warwickshire 2 competed strongly against a formidable Cheshire 2 side before losing 3-7. Calloway and Ludford gained impressive triumphs over Ray Jackson and John Hope respectively to give Cheshire 2 plenty to think about, and Ludford also teamed up with Linda Clempson to score an exciting 12-10 fifth set victory in the second Mixed Doubles.
Warwickshire 2 had one more match to play v Nottingham in Nottingham the following weekend, Notts were not at full strength and Warwickshire 2 ran out 7-3 winners, Nottingham's Alan Philpott was too strong for John Ludford and Pete Dunnett and he won a mixed doubles too but the other 7 games went to Warwickshire 2.
2 wins for Malcolm Macfarlane, 1 for Pete Dunnett and John Ludford, a good win by Linda Clempson over Betty Godfery, the Men's Doubles and the first Mixed Doubles totted up to 7 wins
This means that Warwickshire 2 finish 8th 2 points clear of Cambridge in 9th while Warwickshire 1 finish mid table in the Division 1A table
