Derby Closed Table Tennis Tournament ( Report by Mike Payne )
This was played at the Draycott TT Centre on Sunday continuing the tournaments started in 1948, excepting 1997 which was missed because of a clash with local and national dates and Easter!
The entry at 39 was on a par with other years but possibly held down by a certain other cup match on Pride Park. Mike Starkie ran the event which allowed previous organiser John Cowell to play.
R-R player Moh Shabir, unbeaten in the league so far had a good afternoon . He took home the Open Singles Shield beating Craig Feargrieve of the Sawley 1st team in the final and the Over 40s trophy by beating Tony Smith (Draycott) in that final.
Another player with bag of medals was Diana Rusinova from Latvia and now playing for the Draycott club. She beat Emily O'Sullivan (Littleover) in the Ladies final and Matthew Webster (Waingroves) in the Junior final. Her standing in the league can be judged by her loss to Moh Shabir in the semi-final of the Open Singles. Her winning streak continued when she beat Adam Smith (now studying at Nottingham Trent) in the semi and Craig Feargrieve in 5 games in the Handicap Singles final.
